Before the outbreak of the war, he reenlisted and was stationed at Camp Douglas. ln the fall of I9I 7, he was transferred to Waco, Texas, where the 32nd Division was being formed, and after six months of training there, sailed from Camp Merritt, N. J., at the end of anuary, I9l8. France, following wounds received from a high explosive shell which had burst near him the day before. The same shell killed his commanding officer, Capt. Myron C. West, of Madison, with whom he was in conversation. He had served as a private, corporal, and sergeant on the Mexican border in l9l6, and reenlisted at the outbreak of hostilities in the spring of l9l 7. At the time of his death, he was a student in the johns Hopkins Medical School and, as an enlisted member of the Medical Reserve Corps, expected to be called for immediate service at any time.
