He was landsman for the Chief Elec- 'trician of Camp Perry at the time of his death. He gradu- ated from the College of Agriculture in 1915. Slat Scbgcwicla Talon, '17 . . While a junior he enlisted in the Wisconsin National Guard, and served on the Mexican border during the summer of l9I6. ln March, 1917, he was commissioned second lieutenant, and served as instructor at various mid-western camps until May, 1918, when he was commissioned captain and ordered over- seas with a casualty company. He was married just be- fore sailing. Hia First action was at Vaux, where he won the Distinguished Service Cross for extraordinary heroism in action. He had captured a large number of prisoners and much enemy ammunition, and had personally lcd an attack against a machine gun nest, routing and cap- turing the unners. He remained at the front and was in the thick 0? the decisive battles of the war. Tmery Talough. '15 .... Slurgcon :Bev 1s1GIluss Sergeant. flnfuulry Died of pneumonia at U. S. Base Hospital No. 7, France. on September l6, l9l8, as the result of gas wounds at Cha- teau Thierry some weeks before. Enlisting in july, 1917, he was trained at Camp Douglas and Camp McArthur, Waco. Texas. As a member of the historic 32nd Division. he sailed from Camp Merritt late in February, 1918, ar- rivi.ng in France the first of March. Held in a military hospital at Brest for two months, following an attack of pneumonia. Rejoined his company on the Alsace-Lorraine front in May. Later he transferred to the Somme region where he took part in the battle of Cantigny, escaping unhurt. During the severe eight-day battle of Chateau Thierry, in early August, he was severely gassed and re- moved to the Base Hospital, where he died. Wilmer iff. ificke, '17 Narragansett Diet, Y.. fd Drivale. ffielo Artillery , Shot by a German sniper as he was helping shell an enemy ammunition train near the Belgian border. He died at his post as he was about to man his gun. Enlisting in the summer of 1917, he was trained at Boxford, Mass., and was sent overseas in October of the same year. He had completed just a year of service when he met his death. At the university he was a prominent member of the Cercle Francais and the Germanistische Gesellschaft, appearing in every dramatic production of the two clubs during the academic year 1916-l9l7. He was a brilliant student, and was candidate for the Cecil Rhodes scholar- ship at the time of his enlistment. :frank joseph Tfnlrop, '18 . Glevelanb, Ohio Tfnsign, Hobie Corps, LC. S. ffl. UW.. ff. Died of Spanish Influenza at the Naval Hospital, Chel- 593, Mass., on September 30, 1918. Enlisting in spring, he was sent to Harvard University for training as a radio operator. Enlisting in the French service as a lied Cross ambulance driver in February, l9l7, Lieu- tenant Hefferan was one of seven who formed Wisconsin's first contingent. He served in the Verdun sector until October, l9I7, when he was discharged from the French service to enter an oH-icers' training camp at Fort Sheri- dan, lll. He was commissioned in December, and returned to Europe in january. Before his death, he saw active service in Alsace-Lorraine and Bel ium. Tom Helferan was one of t.he foremost students Eflisconsin has ever ro- duced. He was one of the founders of the Wisconsin ijt- erary Magazine, was University Editor of The Daily Car- dinal, and was the author of many popular poems. At the time of his death, he was wearing a Wisconsin arm band. Buried at Chaumery, close to the rave of Quentin Roose- velt. He was a member of Delta Kappa Epsilon. lfarmon Ilorlcr Hook. '20 . . Oak Dark, fill. Gabel, Aviation Corps Died at his home while on furlough from March Field. California, on December IS, I9lB, of Spanish lnfluenza. Enlisting in the University of Chica o Ambulance Unit. he was in training at Allentown. Pa., wiiere he became a Ist class ser eant. He remained there until March, I9I8, when, at his own request, he was transferred to the aviation service and sent to the Princeton Ground School. ln june he was ordered to March Field. Riverside, California, for actual flying training. He was a member of Delta Kappa Epsilon. Icon Beck Hook, '16 .... wauwalosa flying Cabal. Ulaval Aviation Detachment Died of Spanish Influenza at Seattle, Washington, on October I4, l9l8, while in training as a flying cadet in Com- pan 5, Naval Aviation Detachment. Cadet Hook at- tenriled the University in l9l3 and l9l4, later graduatin from Harvard in l9l6. He was a brilliant student and established an enviable college record while at Wisconsin. He was the author of several articles on historical subjects, the result of research work along original lines. Harolb Herman Fffolling, '18 . . . :plymouth Observer, Dbaloon Aviation Service Died of pneumonia at Columbus Flying School on April 4, l9l8, following the contraction of a severe cold while doing practice observation work in a rainstorm. He had completed his ground school training at Omaha, Nebraska, three months before. Ghcoborc Xobert Moyer, '12 . Syracuse, 51. 31. lieutenant, Ilnfantrg Killed by enemy machine gun fire on july l8, l9l8, at Chateau Thierry. Was a member of a party of volunteers to carry in the wounded. Hoyer entered the First Officers' Training Camp at Fort Sheridan in l9l7. He was commis- sioned and assigned to the 32nd Division as an infantry instructor and sent to Waco, Texas. He embarked from Camp Merritt, N. J., when the Division left this country in February, l9l8, and saw several months of active serv- ice on the Alsatian and Belgian fronts before meeting his death. He was the most prominent member in his class, being editor in chief of the Daily Cardinal and The Wis- consin Magazine, a member of White Spades, Iron Cross, Sigma Delta Chi, the Student Conference, the Y. M. C. A. Cabinet, and the Wisconsin Dramatic Society.
