He was a member of a machine gun company and, a few hours before his death, had taken command of the compan followin the death of the regular commanding officer earlier in the day. While in the university he was a member of the varsity football team. l Q Tern Bristol, '18 ..... . Oakfielb D rivate. 'Jnfantrg Died of pneumonia at the Naval Base Hospital, Brest. France, on March 9, l9l8. At the end of hivunior year rn the university, Bristol had enlisted in the isconsin Na- tional Guard, leaving for Camp Douglas in August. ln late autumn, he was transferred to Waco, Texas, where he was in training until February. On February l2. l9l8. he sal-led from New York as a member of the now famous 32nd Dwi- sion. He was the second Wisconsin man to die in the service. 4 John Wiliam Buckley, '20 . . Granb Diapibs lieutenant, Aviation Corps Killed on November 8, l9lB, while on a photographic ob- servin mission in an aviation school in central France, wherein was acting as an instructor. He was one of the first Wisconsin men to enter the service, having enlisted on May l3, l9l7. Previous to his death he had done several months of service f-lying on the Flanders front. Air condi- tions on the fatal day were unfavorable, and it was noted that he encountered rou h fl 'ng while ascending. The lane made a tailspin. and as 13-ii attempted to right it, the horizontal stabilizer crumpled. The machine made a two thousand foot nose dive. crushing Lieutenant Buckley and an oberver to death. Rlexanber Brabley Burns, '20 fDowner's Grove, Illl. Corporal, Tielb Zrlillery Died in the Chaufontaine Hospital, near Luneville, France, on March l0, l9l8, as the result of twenty-four shra nel wounds received two days earlier while repairing the battery telephone line under bombardment. He had been cited for bravery in American and French dispatches dated March 7. As the results of his efforts on that day, communication between neighboring French and American Held artillery was restored after having been broken by enemy action for more than six hours. He was recom- mended for the Croix de Guerre, and was awarded it after his death. being the first man of his regiment to win a deco- ration. He was not yet twenty at the time of his death. I9I8, at Chateau Thierry, where the famous 32nd lgivision of Wisconsin and Michigan troops stop ed the westward flow of Hun troops and, almost unaideg, routed them after more than a week of desperate lighting, turning the tide of victory in favor of the allies. A member of Company C, to which Lieutenant Cranefield was attached, states that although badly wounded in a charge, Lieutenant Crunefield crept along, urgin his men forward, until he was struck in the head by a ixullet. Rvialion Corps Died in an aerial collison with a second plane at Kelly Field No. 2, South Antonio, Texas, on May 27, l9l8, just before completing his flying course. He had not yet been commissioned but, having been recommended to be made a pilot, his commission was sent to his parents upon its arrival. He was buried in Lakewood Cemetery with full military honors. He was a member of Chi Psi. frank liloysins Daley, '12 . . . maoison Sergeant. fficlo Fffospilal Corps Died of pneumonia on November 20, l9l8, at the now famous Field Hospital IZ7, which is attached to the 32nd Division. As a non-commissioned officer of the l27th Field Hospital Corps. serving under Major Lorenz of Madison, he was in the thick of the fight at Chateau Thierry and at Fismes, going out upon the battle field to give first aid to the wounded and directing their transportation to the Field and base hospitals. During the decisive struggle of the first week of August, he was obliged to remain in No Man's Land for three days and nights, under two Fires, unable to return to American lines. He had enlisted in the summer of l9l7, and after being trained at Waco, Texas, left for overseas in january, l9I8. He graduated from the law school in l9l4, and was engaged in the practice of that pro- fession at the time of his enlistment. Marry Eillon, '14 .... . monbovi Lliculcnanl, Ilnfanlry i Killed in the battle of Argonne Forest on October 2, l9lB, by a shrapnel shell. For three months before his death, he had gone through heavy fighting in the vicinity of Chateau Thierry, among other things, leading his men over the top on four consecutive days and taking all ob- jectives assigned to him. He was cited for conspicuous bravery in the vicinity of Soissons in the operations from july I8-23, l9l8, and won the Croix de Guerre and was rec- ommended for promotion as the result of his gallantry in action at Chateau Thierry proper on August 5.
