He was a member of a machine gun company and, a few hours before his death, had taken command of the compan followin the death of the regular commanding officer earlier in the day. France, on March 9, l9l8. At the end of hivunior year rn the university, Bristol had enlisted in the isconsin Na- tional Guard, leaving for Camp Douglas in August. ln late autumn, he was transferred to Waco, Texas, where he was in training until February. On February l2. l9l8. he sal-led from New York as a member of the now famous 32nd Dwi- sion. He was the second Wisconsin man to die in the service. 4 John Wiliam Buckley, '20 . . Granb Diapibs lieutenant, Aviation Corps Killed on November 8, l9lB, while on a photographic ob- servin mission in an aviation school in central France, wherein was acting as an instructor. He was one of the first Wisconsin men to enter the service, having enlisted on May l3, l9l7. Previous to his death he had done several months of service f-lying on the Flanders front. Air condi- tions on the fatal day were unfavorable, and it was noted that he encountered rou h fl 'ng while ascending. The lane made a tailspin. and as 13-ii attempted to right it, the horizontal stabilizer crumpled. The machine made a two thousand foot nose dive. crushing Lieutenant Buckley and an oberver to death. Rlexanber Brabley Burns, '20 fDowner's Grove, Illl. Corporal, Tielb Zrlillery Died in the Chaufontaine Hospital, near Luneville, France, on March l0, l9l8, as the result of twenty-four shra nel wounds received two days earlier while repairing the battery telephone line under bombardment. He had been cited for bravery in American and French dispatches dated March 7. As the results of his efforts on that day, communication between neighboring French and American Held artillery was restored after having been broken by enemy action for more than six hours. He was recom- mended for the Croix de Guerre, and was awarded it after his death. being the first man of his regiment to win a deco- ration. He was not yet twenty at the time of his death.
