The Articling Committee this year has attempted to aid students in identifying and evaluating the personal and professional factors they should weigh in selecting a firm. A final word - we at Western are receiving a quality legal education that has not merely meant the acquisition of fundamental legal concepts and principles. but also the capacity for analytic thought coupled with the ability to communicate it. As graduates. we shall occupy a variety of positions of influence and leadership - in the judiciary, in government, in industry and commerce, and elsewhere. Lawyers have traditionally participated in and influenced public affairs out of proportion to their numbers. Many of us will find ourselves where we are in positions to apply the law creatively, and perhaps to change it. With our position comes the responsibility to understand the social and economic needs of our society. Whether we choose high profile or quiet influence, we have the capacity to make a difference. Remember your unique potential when making the major decision of who you are choosing as your articling mentors. Hopefully we will all find an environment that will best enable us to build on our solid foundation gained at Western. All the best. Jill L. Giese Articling Chairperson. l 984-85 Don Biberdorf and Rob MacDonald UH gr studentsj. ' WLQ It 145' ,, his New-. , ' K ,F l ld' ,vi sa g a .. The University of Western Gntario Dean of Law London. Canada N6A 3K7 l first met Denys some IO years ago when he joined Westerns law faculty after a lengthy and successful career in England. ln spite of his quiet, unassuming manner, his depth of knowledge was immediately apparent. By the time Denys arrived here he had already established himself as a scholar and l regret l did not know him earlier. His scholarship was solid but never ostentatious for ostentation was never part of Denys' character. ln England, he had written dozens of articles and had contributed to several books. Denys never shirked the difficult tasks. Without complaint, he served for many years on difficult University committees. His judgment and understanding of human nature made him uniquely qualified to do so. When he came to us Denys had a deep and abiding interest in students. Love would not be too strong a word. His care for students, his joy in their triumphs and his concern for their problems never waned. Indeed, the remembrances of his students will be his legacy. His love for his family was deep and abiding. All else paled into insignificance. No matter what problems existed at the school, no matter that Denys could be enjoying a discussion whether on law school policy or a point of law, he always knew what came first - his family. ls there anyone here who can recall when Denys was anything but thoughtful, generous and kind in so many ways? He was a fine man. ln sum, he reminded us not to take ourselves too seriously, but simply to strive ahead as best we could. No man is an island. We are, all of us, part of the ocean of life, taking and giving to one another. Denys in his life gave us his decency, his kindness, his sense of balance. ln his death he gives perhaps the most important gift of all - a sense of perspective. ln spite of man 's many conceits, there is an underlying truth. While we are here we must do, each of us, the best we can according to our cir- cumstances. We must leave it at that. W.B. Rayner MEMORIAL 6? Nancy Maxim The sudden death of Nancy Maxim during the summer of l984 brings a loss to our Faculty. She is sadly missed by her friends and classmates who lcnew her as a warm and caring person. During her two years in the law school, Nancy was an active member of the Continuing Education Programme as well as the Womens Law Caucus. ln addition, while attending the school, she lectured in the Sociology Department. To both faculties she brought en- thusiasm, dedication and cheerfulness. ln memory of Nancy the students, professors, administrative and support staff haue commissioned a painting of Clara Brett Martin, the first woman lawyer in Canada. lt will hang in the library as a token of our fond remembrance of Nancy Maxim. .,...n,-, 5 7 it NOTABLE EVENTS alumni - student moot sf' 'bv A QF' ff' lABOVEj Another Alumni bites the dust! lLEFTl Mary Lynn Gleason and Barb Boalee plot their strategy.
