PHOTO CREDITS BILL BARRETT With this background, he was named Dean of Western's Medical School in 1945, and two years later acceded to the Presidency. ln the intervening years, the name of Ed Hall has been synonymous with Western, but the union has not always been a placid one. In one of his foremost aims, he was defeated. For Dr. Hall, Western was to remain a small university, serving primarily the fourteen coun- ties of Southwestern Ontario. Under pressure from the hordes of students demanding entry, and through them the Ontario Govern- ment with its all-important grants, Western was forced into the ex- pansion which is still going strong. In all fairness, it must be said that Dr. Hall has guided that expansion well. To the faculty, he has sometimes seemed less than enthusiastic A sincere Thanks, Dr. Hall, for being our President. about their suggestions, and the student body have seen him as remote and much less a familiar figure than they could wish. These criticisms are perhaps the inevitable result of Dr. Hall's decision to concentrate his abilities on the immediate and pressing problems of the University and edu- cation on the university level all across the country. Certainly, no one has given so unselfishly of time, talent, and health to the University, and though disagreeing with his course, his critics have never lost their respect for their chief administrator. ln fact, the scope of this one man's career, including numerous de- grees, directorships, and member- ships in many academic and public service societies, has always made Western aware of the privilege it has been granted in having Ed Hall. No one really believes that Dr. Hall is retiring: he is just closing one memorable chapter in his life.

Edward Hall without a strong sense of incredulity. As the youngest university president in North America in 1946, he could look back even then at a list of accomplishments that would satisfy most professional men. Twenty years later, that list seems nothing less than a composite career of at least three brilliant scholars. The old truism about still waters is barely adequate to describe the man whom critics have called un- prepossessingn. In charge of Aviation Medicine for the Fi.C.A.F. during World War ll, Dr. Hall became the only non-flying recipient of the Air Force Cross, and was further honoured with the American Legion of Merit. The measure of the man's genius is perhaps best illustrated by an accomplishment that must strike home to students. With a Master's Degree in Biochemistry, the young associate and friend of Sir Frederick Bant- ing tried more than twenty examinations in one year, passed them all, and was admitted to the final year of Medicine at Toronto - an achievement unequalled by any other man of our time. A year after receiving his M.D. he was granted his Ph.D. in Physiology. M '. 'I ' I 'Fil' rg' ' f x .le
