Dedication James Bertram Collipz 1892-1965 Many millions of people throughout the world ovve their lives, and many millions more their longevity to the major medical discoveries and varied scientific research of James Bertram Collip, who died on June 19, 1965. As a young man in 1921, Dr. Collip, in experiments with Sir Frederick Banting, patented insulin for use throughout the world. There followed over forty years of singular achievements in the fields of Biochemistry, Physiology, and Endocrin- ology, looth in research and education. Dr. Collip became Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Professor and l-lead of the Department of Medical Research at the University of Western Ontario in 1947. He proved himself to be a kind but critical professor who demanded of others the excellence he gave of himself. Dr. Collip was an inspiring scientist and also a warm and sensitive man, who modestly bore his tributes from many uni- versities and numerous international scientific and medical societies. This University shares with the world the loss of a beloved and deeply devoted man, a friend to many, and a doctor who enriched medical science and the wel- fare of all people. 2
