The distinction of incorporating the equire's helmet seems to be reserved for universities. The knight's mantle, which Lord Bessborough, when Governor General of Can- ada, could scarcely believe would be granted to a Dominion institution, is an important distinction. Holes have been transformed into ribbons while heraldic artists down through the centuries have embellished the ragged cloak until it has become a decorative article scarcely resembling its original form. Soft maple leaves which are red in colour in the fall were placed at the top of the crest to mark the Arms as distinctly Canadian. The stag in the shield is from the coat of arms of the City of London Ontario - signifying the relation of the City and the University la municipal universityl. The Peache Lion with its double tail and ducal crown was taken from the coat of arms of Canon Alfred Peache, whose money started this institution in 1878. The book appears twice - in the shield and in the crest to symbolize what we are and what we must be always, The Greek proverb says: The fountain of wis- dom flows through books. i

And as I say to you at Convocation, By the authority vested in me as Chan- cellor of the University, I admit to you the degree of ..., I do so with the knowledge that you have taken advantage of the opportunities which have been given to you, that you have at least pondered, if not resolved in your own mind, some of the great human problems of today, that you have established a set of real values, and that you recognize that as graduates your responsibilities to society and to yourself are great indeed. I welcome this opportunity not only ot congratulating all of you on your suc- cess at Western but, as well, at entreating each of you, as Alumni, to be con- scious and as proud of your University as it is of you. ls-fig Richard G. Ivey, Chancellor
