One of the outward and visible hrstfruits of the times is your freedom to choose the field of activity in which you prefer to put your training and your talents to the test: less patent may be the fact that freedom entails l-:een competition. May you live to see the thing for which you and your comrades fought be- come the common concept of the understanding citizenry of a world from which the notion of force as a persuasive power has faded forever. To the Class of 1946: IN TIIE CoURsE OF the years just past, your thoughts and actions were strongly influenced by a world at war. The pressing needs of the armed forces made you wonder whether you should continue with your university training or whether you should associate yourselves more directly with the war effort. That you were allowed such a choice is proof of the worth of your training and the need that Canada has of your abilities. In the days ahead of you live up to that trust by building on the foundation that VVestern has helped you obtain. I am sure that, in leading a life with a purpose, you will do credit to our VVestern and to yourselves.
