WYW1 if 1 '10 we awww 4194.2 .- You are leaving the University to take your place in the world of affairs at a time more dis- rnaying than any in all our recorded history. ln this world you have very distinct duties as young men and women to whom special privileges have been given and from whom, therefore, special duties may be demanded. Your primary duty is to prepare yourselves for after-war conditions, not alone for your own after-war pursuits, but also that you may contribute to that new world that must come. Make your- selves acguainted with the mistakes of the period following the last war and with the effects of those mistakes upon men and nations. Form sure opin- ions of how similar errors may he avoided this time. Consult with othersfnot fanatics wedded to some illusory theory but those who are clear thinkers and open-minded. Be open-minded your- selves. Listen patiently to others, then form your own opinions, and when you are sure you are right, become vocal. lf all the graduates of Canadian universities would do this, the results would be far-reaching upon Canada ahead. and the world in the years that are A. 76 7fne Glam ay 194.2 .. You are about to join that great fraternity ot college and university graduates who are bound together through their common experiences by an intangible but unbreakable tie. With this tact in mind l feel that as gradu- ates ot the University ot Western Qntario in this year l942 you will not allow your minds to atrophy, but will continue to be students and will remove, so tar as you personally can, the reproach that has been otten laid at the door ot institutions ot higher education, namely, that in many instances their graduates cease to be students as soon as they leave their Alma Mater. ls it too much to suggest that you, as an individual, and as a selected rep- resentative ot a privileged group should be an example to your fellows, a leader in your com- munity and a guide to the best way ot lite, always courageous, alert, cheertul and usetul. WALTER lAlVlES BROWN, Executive Secretary.
