THE UNIVERSITY OF WESTERN ONTARIO LONDON CANADA 5rd May, l9hl. To the Graduates of l9hl: Ir these difficult days when the frame- work of civilization seems to be dlsintegrating and the small nations of Europe are one by one surrendering their sovereignty to the dictator powers it is essential that our young men and young women should take their citizen- ship seriously and should dedicate their lives to the cause of freedom - a freedom for which our forefathers made costly sacrifices. In the present crisis we are called upon to preserve this priceless heritage. Freedom in its widest and truest sense includes the fundamental principles of demooracyg the right to govern ourselves, the right to worship God in our own way and the right to search openly for the truth. The preservation of mental and spiritual freedom and the extension of individual and collective justice is a practical ideal to which this generation must dedicate itself.
