THE UNIVERSITY OF WESTERN ONTARIO I.ONDON,CANADA V soano oF Gov: RNDRS 5rd May, l9h1. To the Graduates of 19h1: You are leaving the University to take your place in the world of affairs at a time more dismaying than any in all our recorded history. ln this world you have very distinct duties as young men and women to whom special privileges have been given and from whom, therefore, special duties may be demanded. Your first duty is that you shall contribute every last atom of your energy to the winning of the war. This is the immediate duty of all of us. A Your second duty is to prepare yourselves for the after-war conditions, not alone for your own after-war pursuits, but also that you may contribute to that new world that must come. Make yourselves acquainted with the mistakes of the period following the last war and with the effects of those mistakes upon men and nations. Form sure ' opinions of how similar errors may be avoided this time. Consult with others-not fanatics wedded to some illusory theory but those who are clear thinkers and open-minded. Be open-minded yourselves. Listen patiently to others, then form your own opinions and when you are sure you are right, become vocal. If all the graduates of Canadian universities would do this, the results would be far-reaching upon Canada and the world in the - years that are ahead. THE UNIVERSITY OF WESTERN ONTARIO LONDON CANADA 5rd May, l9hl. To the Graduates of l9hl: Ir these difficult days when the frame- work of civilization seems to be dlsintegrating and the small nations of Europe are one by one surrendering their sovereignty to the dictator powers it is essential that our young men and young women should take their citizen- ship seriously and should dedicate their lives to the cause of freedom - a freedom for which our forefathers made costly sacrifices. In the present crisis we are called upon to preserve this priceless heritage. Freedom in its widest and truest sense includes the fundamental principles of demooracyg the right to govern ourselves, the right to worship God in our own way and the right to search openly for the truth. The preservation of mental and spiritual freedom and the extension of individual and collective justice is a practical ideal to which this generation must dedicate itself.
