Arls '40 planned and carried oul lhe Prolesl Campaign and we defy any olher year lo beal il. Belore classes resumed in I939, war was declared and lhe world suddenly look on a lillle dillerenl appearance. As if lhal were nol bad enough, il was evenlually revealed lhal Arls '40 had placed lhe Universily in lhe hands of a series ol bad-men. The edilor ol lhe Gazelle had become an irresponsible scamp ol lickle idenlily. The Prelecl had dilficully keeping his Assembly in hand and lhe U.S.C. developed ils own aulocracy. To lop all our worries Arl Lennox relurned lrom his vacalion behind whal he claimed was a red, arislocralic beard-needless lo say il was laler removed al a pre-rugby game lracas. To celebrale our linal year lhe Muslangs won lhe inler- collegiale lille wilhoul losing a single game. All Hurley won lhe McCullagh lrophy and Ralph Blackmore won lhe McCullagh. The Taylors ran campaigns againsl secrel lrials, lhe Gazelle, lhe Prelecl, lhe Honour Sociely, elc. Conway, aller lhree years ol solilary sulking, assumed lhe edilorship ol lhe Commerce Quarlerly and lurned in lhe linesl iob lo dale. Carllon added lo his lame as a dance convenor by pulling on his supreme ellorl, lhe Arls '40 dance. The war lirsl dipped inlo our under- graduales wilh bolh John Rider and Bill Archer leaving Universily lo ioin lhe army. Haggsie, who had been benl on becoming lirsl lady ol Arls '40 , was loiled by Mary Hayman who cul classes lor a couple ol days lo go and gel married. Our beaulilul sub-prelecl demonslraled lhe diversily ol her lalenls by modelling lor nalional slocking adverlising. Fellowships were won by several ol our members, lirsl blood going lo Clyde MacDonald, slar pianisl of our year. Gradua- lion loomed in sighl and pre-exam cramming began again. Aller lour years we almosl had il down lo a science. Nolable lealure ol gradualion was our unique female geologisl, slriclly an Arls '40 producl. Peg Slurman was lhe baby gradualeg she won'l be eligible lor lhe old age pension unlil l986. ll was greal while il lasled, lhe pily is lhal finally we musl leave. ArTs '40 broke on WesTern wiTh greaT gusTo. ln our Tour years here we can aT leas+ boasT of The quesTionable honour of having been The mosT commenTed on, if noT The mosT viciously maligned, Year . ln SepTember, 5936, we received a somewhaT dubious welcome Trom ArTs '39. This iniTiaTion sTarTed Freshie Gordon Taylor on The TirsT of a long series oT proTesTs. These proTesTs reached a peak oT disTincTion Three years laTer when a similar acTion almosT resulTed in The closing of The UniversiTy by The Provincial GovernmenT. Q ln The Tall of our TirsT year we received all The rouTine warnings: speeding on The drive, Throwing lunches around Room 2, breaking TurniTure in Room I9 and daTing college co-eds. We remember, even Then, beefing abouT CaTeTeria meals and preiudiced sTudenT courTs. Early in our TirsT Term Jim Orr was given The quesTionable honour of being elecTed The TirsT presidenT of ArTs '40 in The hisTory of The UniversiTy. These TirsT elecTions marked The beginning oT our period of high pressure poliTics and resulTed in The largesT voTe polled in Freshman elecTions up To ThaT Time. Ken Mooney, aTTer cloisTering himself wiTh Brown's column Tor our TirsT Three monThs, finally decided he had absorbed enough college wiT To wriTe his own nonsense. He bursT TorTh in laTe I936 wiTh The eTiForTs ThaT laTer were To degeneraTe inTo Joe College . AIT Hurley, during The same period, was laying The ToundaTions ThaT were laTer To make him WesTern's number one sTudenT aThleTe. He Tound a place in aThleTic and scholasTic headlines in his TirsT year and has consisTenTly held iT. ln The spring of '37 The Girls' Senior BaskeTball Team won The bronze baby Tor The second consecuTive Time and They've hogged iT preTTy well ever since. The Women's Council, wiTh Dr. Turville as Toreman, were abouT To pick up shovels and dig The ToundaTions Tor a Women's Union Building. They sTill are. WiTh a liTTle more money and some co-operaTion Trom belligerenT naTions They'll do iT yeT. Our TirsT year closed wiTh Terry Ferris being elecTed new presidenT and Frances Boyce, vice-presidenT. ln The Tall oT '37, our second year, we iniTiaTed ArTs '4l, only To Tind ThaT a Third Taylor had arrived To swell The Two-man chorus againsT iniTiaTion. The resT oT us conTinued To enioy making The Frosh look silly. IT wasn'T very hard. AbouT This Time, Johnny Loaring, prominenT member oT ArTs '40, ran oTf To AusTralia. ATTer Things had seTTled down again aT WesTern he came back To Train Tor The Olympic Games and TurTher disTinguished himself. We remember WesTern Univer- siTy's radio broadcasT, Avis Clarke shaming Don Redman wiTh her super band-leading, marriage proposals To co-eds, Mooney co-ediTing The JazeTTe land ThaT killed The JazeTTe Tor a couple oT yearsl, The aboliTion of iniTiaTion, and The sTudenT courT sTill remaining a hoTbed oT dissaTisTacTion. AT The end of second Term Terry was re-elecTed year presidenT and Marjorie FeaThersTone Took over The vice-presidency. Our Third year opened wiTh John HunT and ArT Lennox collaboraTing wiTh Bill Bramah in The ediTing of The GazeTTe.
