To the Members of Class '39: The Diamond Jubilee has been much in our thoughts of late. What has the future in store for Western? What ought her policy to be for the new era of her service? These questions are inevitable and irresistible. Moreover, they are the same questions, merely cast in other terms, you members of Class '59 are asking in regard to yourselves as you approach graduation. I think I have the answer --one that can be easily remembered. I stumbled upon it the other day while browsing in my library. It is a sentence written by the late Sir Arthur Pinero: NI believe the future is only the past again, entered through another gate.N The meaning is plain: as experience has already shown you, growth, progress and success will always depend upon your own courage, alert- ness, patience and labor. This simple, direct and pithy answer may, if consciously applied, be of great value to you as you pass through the gate of graduation into what is but the old scene decked out in new trappings. That your passage through the gate will be happy and what you achieve beyond it worthy and enduring, is my earnest wish for you all. Yours sincerely, W3
