THE UNIVERSITY OF WESTERN ONTARIO LONDON,CANADA March 9, 1937 Members of Class '37: The dedication of the 1937 Occidentalia to me means more to me than words can express. I interpret it as my students' affectionate recognition of the sincerity of my endeavors to devote myself undividedly to our uni- versity and its highest interests. I shall always cherish this tribute as an outstanding honour. Each year on the eve of graduation my thoughts turn to the real purpose of a university. This year a new formulation of this purpose has come to meg I pass it on for its truthfulness and for its clear suggestion of a mission for Class '37. It is this: The University exists not to mane great men and women but to help create a great society. The words give the substance of a state- ment recently made by a well-known university head in his inaugural address. Obviously, the growth of society depends upon the strength of public opinion. Therein you may see your mission. Your studies, ranging as they do over the whole world of the past and present, have given you a method of discrimination between the sound and the unsound in public policy. It is your duty as university graduates to lead and to shape public opinion in the same direction. WBut how? In countless ways: some of you by the direct and formal method of political careers, but most of you in- directly through your activities in various societies, churches, clubs, guilds, lodges, institutes and so forth. after all it is in the vast number of voluntary bodies of this kind of you to that public opinion is really formed. So I beg take a broad view of citizenship, participate enthusiastically in the work of such bodies, and thus help to fulfil the purpose for which your university was founded .ffm
