Broken down statistically for the fall of 1978, each member invested approximately 136 hours of his time and $37.00 from his wallet, excluding liquid refreshments. He saw 1,780 miles of pavement pass before his eyes, as he ventured to such exotic metropolises as Gadsden and Gunthersville, Alabama, to name a few. Despite the hardships that required each member to buy his own uniform and pay all transportation costs for away games, the combined roster for fall and spring seasons averaged 26 players. 133 The record for both seasons was 13 - 17-2, not to shabby when one considers the limited budget and such formidable opponents as the Universities of Georgia, Florida, and Alabama (at Tuscaloosa), NCAA-member Toccoa Falls College, 1978 GIAC soccer champions Berry College, as well as Tri-City Select, one of the top Division I Atlanta soccer league clubs. The West Georgia Soccer Club exercises a club concept, in which each member that shows up for a game is guaranteed some playing time. However, as the growth of soccer as a major sport becomes more widespread in the United States, Coach Chico Moss foresees a more competitive attitude on the horizon. 134 Some individual personalities that shone throughout the season were 1978 co-captains John Totta Green, Mark Roland, amd Tom Big Foot Callahan, a.k.a. The Gobbler . Other seniors were Mike Cahalan, Scott Allen, Tim Dugan, Jim Mellote and Mike Wally Boyd. - ' ' y ' ' Returning veterans included Rico Moss, Scotty Chestnut, Toby Franklin, Bill O ' Brien, Michael Flinn, Chris Sellin, Frank Ingui, Paul Rintye, Don Rose and Steve Harrison. Some outstanding rookies bringing fresh talent to the club were Bill Denio, Ricky Pearson, and Duncan MacNeil, to name a few. Tom Buchan 197 X ' A small group of untrained students were asked by members of the faculty and administration to put together a yearbook to end all yearbooks. The Chieftain itself was at stake. If this book is not one of top quality, we were told, there will never be another one. So we set out to do our best; our best is done. Most of you have never met me or the members of my staff, yet we feel we know each of you. Why? Because in this yearbook we have photographed and written about a small part of what is now your past. We feel certain that everyone of you will find a picture or group of words in this book that will touch a part of your life. If we are wrong then we have failed; we are not wrong. Putting together this yearbook is the hardest thing that we have ever done. We could not have done it without each other, our advisors, our publishing representative and the people from our past who helped to make us what we are.
