college of education p The first teacher training in tho Stato of Washington was given at the University in 1878. In 1913, the faculty voted to establish a school of Education. In 1914, the School of Education became a collego, tho first such college in any state university. In re- cent years the College has expanded its facilities. Included in this expansion was the College of Education Library. This was tho first departmental library on campus .established in 1913, a branch of the University’s Henry Suzzallo Library. The College of Education includos such services as curriculum workshops, institutes, consultative programs, informal help through letters, telephone calls, and visits to the student teachors, a reading clinic, in which teachers learn to diagnose educational failure and to plan remedial instruction for retarded pupils. In all courses of the education curricula, the goal is to develop a teacher who, through mastery of academic contont and pro- fessional techniques, thinks creatively, values good citizenship, and reflects the best in democratic society. DEAN FRANCIS F. POWERS college of forestry In this industrially significant Pacific Northwest logging region of the United States, the College of Forestry is obviously of major importance. Placement possibili- ties for the Forestry graduate are high, since the Forest Sorvice, logging companies, and wood, plastic, and paper industries in this locality annually employ many new men. The College offers a four-year curricula leading to the degree of Bacholor of Science in Forestry with speciali- zation in forost management, logging engineering, and forest products. The first two years are composed of general courses, whereas tho last two years constitutes specialization by the student in his major field of study. The Society of American Foresters fully accredits the very important and expanding Colloqe of Forestry. It is conveniently located in the heart of one of tho finest lumber producing areas in the country. Students are thus able to study forestry from first-hand experience.
