Seven members appointed by the Governor of the State with the approval of the State Senate comprise the Board of Regents. They serve without compensation for terms of six years each. The backbone of the University's government is found in the Board of Regents, for the government is vested within their hands. The President of the University has immediate charge of the administration of the institution, under rules prescribed by the Regents. A University Senate elected by the faculty represents the faculty's point of view in the administration of the University. The Board has full authority for the operation of the University and its property of various kinds. Among the board members' very important duties is the task of appointing the President and approving faculty appoint- ments. Vie President Harold P. Evarott board of regents Back row (Ml lo right): Grant Armttrong. Thomat Balmar, Or. Donald Corbett, and Winlock Millar. Front row (Ml lo right): Chariot M. Harris, Chariot Frankland, Mr . J. To all who will see this Tyee of 1955, and particularly to those who will cherish it as I will, I sond herewith my sincerest greetings. Tyee is one of the finest records of the University, because it reflects with warmth and interest tho personalities and events that compose a segment of University history. Those who love Tyee, I think, are those who have talcen the greatest joy in their Univorsitv experiences and who know that in the Tyco record they will be able to relive forover a period that is one of the most important in the’r lives. The University does its best to prepare its students for pro- ductive work, for maturity, and for intelligent citixcnship. The University machinery is a complex machinery involving sys- tems, and people, and programs, and activities, and social ovonts, and studies that both mold the student and give him measureless opportunity for intellectual and social growth and self-expression. To put these elements—the personalities and tho machinery—within a single frame is a difficult and challenging task. 8ut Tyee does it. And a publication such as Tyee, produced by students with a fresh appreciation of University life, comes closor than any. I suspect, to boing a truo reflection of the University spirit. Tyee takes its place not only in University archives but in the hearts of University people. I am glad that this is so. Tho pages that are new today will be no loss interesting a genera- tion from now. They will, in fact, become more interesting as the years qo by. And all University people, myself in- cluded, will tako increasing pleasure from them. Sincerely, Best wishes to each of you who at the completion of another school year have advanced to new heights of academic achievement and social understanding. We have come far on tho road to the conquest of the physical frontiers. Men have populated nearly every wilder- ness and swept the continents from sea to sea with civiliz- ations in varying degrees of maturity. There are, however, endless and perplexing questions about the human relationships which exist in the world today. In the realm of the intellect and tho spiritual there are vast unex- plored fields in which lie undeveloped resources for tho achievement of peace. Though the past is filled with colossal industrial accomplishments, we have yet to work out the practical global application of those Divinely humane prin- ciples which we believe to hold the answer for uniting man- kind in tho pursuit of personal freedom and world peace. These questions await the alert intellect, the faith and courage of thousands of young college graduates. We wish you the best as you turn your resourcefulness, your learning and your idealism into the channels of service from which shall flow tho solutions, one by one, to the many problems of our day. 18
