Call if success or happiness or service or leadership. The words, l believe, are inferchangeable, for success depends upon happiness which in furn grows from service. And where men serve fhey become leaders whefher in small communifies or around nafional council fables. No maferialism can bring fhe sense of safisfacfion fhaf a spirifual dedfcafion fo doing fhings for ofher people can bring. Today you are receiving 'rhe educafion and fraining which equip you fo serve beffer, fo live more fully, fo love more ferevenfly, fo lead more forcefully. Whaf of infegrify, honesfy, humilify, courage, effecfiveness, sfafure? All of fhese manful affribufes follow nafurally when serving, when making fhis world a beffer place, becomes fhe fheme of a young man or woman's life: lnfegrify, because he has one purpose, honesfy, because he believes firsf in ofhersg humilify, because he has no shame fo cover wifh false pride, courage, because he knows his cause is jusfg effecfiveness, because he fills a need, sfafure, because God exalfs fhose who humble fhemselves. presidenfs message No+ long ago, when I was inviled fo presenl' +0 a high school reunion a man l had known a+ fhe Universily, I Iurned again 'ro my copies of TYEE for lhe years l9l4 and l9l5. I 'Found 'lhere whal I wanled. Bu+, as usual, l found much more. For in lhe TYEES of my own Uni- versify years is no+ merely 'rhe record buf 'rhe spiril of 'lhe Universify +ha+ l remember. Nowhere else can 'lhis spiril' be found, because TYEE, above all, is a record of you+h and of hope. I+ is land l know l risk being lhoughl' an old man fumbling among his memoriesl a permanenl' piclure of a lime 'rha+ is among +he finesr we are privileged +o live. All of lhis is merely Io say 'lhal' TYEE, l lhink, is a singularly significanl' producl of siudenf acfivily. The volumes change from year +o year, bu+ each is an expression of +he Universi+y as we know ii, as we live il, and as we like 'ro remember i+. ln such a record, a universi'l'y presidenl has only a suppor+ing role. He may be honored in posifion and in con+exl', bul' he knows +ha+ +he pages 'rhal will be mosl' frequenlly examined are 'rhose +ha'r pre- senl' +he faces and ac+ivi+ies oi sfudenls. To all of you who consull TYEE for i954 I say only 'rhal I am ceriain you will find here a book +ha+ springs from fhe heari' of a much-loved Universi+y.
