FORWARD WITH THE WAR behind us and the future filled with ideas of rebuilding the old world into a wiser one which will seek to maintain peace among nations, we turn to the concept of international understanding and good will as a peg upon which to hang our hope for lasting peace. We have learned that despite the economic and military strength of our nation, we cannot isolate ourselves. We cannot shut out our neighbors and brothers across the oceans. Therefore, we must endeavor to understand peo- ples of foreign lands just as they try to learn our ways. Not only do we want to acquire knowledge of other lands and inhabitants through books and other secondary means, but we want to meet our contemporaries from other parts of the world face to face . . . live, learn and play side by side with them. Here at the University where 235 students representing 28 foreign countries are enrolled, we are fortunate to be able to enjoy this experience and gain from it. Because we know that past wars have been caused partly by misunder- standings of nations and peoples, Tyee 1947 holds up international understand- ing as a goal toward v hich we must strive if lasting peace is to belong to the world.
