N sae va rs-in ' -.. W A Q f l X i- N ---Jglgp 4?fr-ss . ,,- 'cj F 2 ., vs--.i '-S '--f ld-'WW -1- ,.-9 N-N... FOREWORD REATED BY THE cooperation of loyal staff members and truly interested printers, the 1935 Tyee attempts a book glimpse of all glamorous high spots and familiar side-lights of one year at Washington. I W The college year of 19341-35 is a clear-cut picture now-but ,i haunting 'cafter years will 'smear these memory outlines. It is for the vaguely saddening pleasure of looking back to the sun and shade of college life that this Tyee was made. V An ideal guided this book-that of avoiding all prejudice and favoritism. Its goal has been to create a University of Washington picture with a special meaning to every Washington student. Ideal and goal may not have been realized, but the staif's work to reach them leaves its mark within these pages. It was for at least a partial realization of the ideal that 'outstanding campus figures hon- ored by Tyee this year were selected by a secret staff vote-after full discussion of each candidate. By this method, the staffuattempted to submerge the prejudices of any one individual in the mass opinion of a staff choice. Pioneering in an effort to recognize the activity of the student body's largest part, the 1935 Tyee features a section for independent students. It is a meager try-but worthy in being a foundation for a more adequate independent section in the Tyees that follow. - - . '

, P t r THE' TRUE Spirit of Washingtonv was created within the heart of Prof. Edmond S. Meany. Memories of his fighting loyalty to Washington will make this spirit of the Purple and Gold live in the hearts of thousands whose lives he touched. By these memories, Washington's '4Keeper of Traditions will become a unifying and humanizing tradition for this large university-assured permanence by the respect and affec- tion which his generosity of spirit drew to him. I - Since 1891, the life of the University has been the life of Professor Meany. By his legislative iight, the present campus site was selected and appropriations made for its buildings. . In his role as sole instructor in the history department, he began his careeras the most widely-loved person on the campus. He became a Keeper of Traditions -but he did not live only in the past. Each' year, thousands of students who sought Washington's gifts left the campus with some touch of Professor Meany's kindly friendship and Washington loyalty. They carried in their hearts the vision of a tall and majestic man, defender of Washington and her students-as we do today and will forever. Professor Meany will never leave Washington, We will continue to feel his protective and proud loyalty for our University. We who -have knovm him-will-. carry him, into the future of Washington history gby making him a reality to those who come in later years. We will keep alive the soul of Washington which Professor Meany inspired. - ' With a true desire to perpetuate the memory of Washington's favorite son, we respectfully dedicate the 1935 Tyee to Professor Edmond S. Meany.
