After teaching for one year at Annie Wright Seminary in Tacoma, she accepted a position as an assistant Dean of Women in 1918, later becoming dean. Mary l. Bash, associate Dean of Women, wanted to he a forester, but studied languages instead. She received her B. A. degree at the University. After teaching in country schools and supervising Y. W. C. A. Work on the University campus, she joined the Dean of Women's staff. STANDARDS COMMITTEE, organized under the A. W. S. constitution and made up of Women students, cooperates with the Dean of Women in making and enforcing rules governing social conduct. ,lane Warrack was chairman this year. '

Condon, N ewhouse Deans of en DEAN HERBERT T. CONDON roamed college campi as a boy, and later deserted his first choice, law, to teach financial management. Since 1903, When he first came to the University, he has been dean of the college of eco- nomics, and during the past four years, Dean of Men. The glamor of law first appealed to Dean Newhouse, the assistant Dean of Men, but after interviewing sev- eral attorneys, he decided to become a merchant, then switched to education. He is a graduate of Washington and Columbia. THE STUDENT AFFAIRS COMMITTEE, under Dean Condon, rules on all student affairs and activities. Butterbaugh, Barnes Bash, Delano P. Dvorak, Gunther H ughes, Jacobsen Garcia-Prada, Shepherd potli htin -Facult SIX FACULTY MEMBERS whose outstanding work in vari- ous iields has brought recognition to the University dur- ing the past year: i AUGUST DVORAK, associate professor of education, who received a second grant from the Carnegie Institute to continue work on his new typewriter keyboard. His pupils have won a maj or share of national typing contests for the last two years. ERNA GUNTHER, director of the Washington State museum, for building up a museum outstanding in its collection of objects of Northwest Indian culture and folklore so that the history df the fast-dying Indians of the Pacific coast is being preserved. GLENN HUGHESI, head of the drama department, for his work in establishing the Studio Theater and for his building up a drama library of more than 6000 volumes without financial aid from the University. THEODORE S. JACOBSEN, executive oiiicer of the astronomy de- partment, who has just completed a six-year research on an astronomical problem, reestablishing a theory discarded more than sixteen years ago. CARLOS GARCIA-PRADA, Colombian consul and associate pro- fessor of Spanish, who has been granted a yea.r's leave of absence from the campus to go back to Colombia to assist in the reorgani- zation of the university system there. DEAN HAROLD SHEPHERD, head of the law school, for his direc- tion of the work of making annotations on recent restatements of the national and state laws. His department is working for the state, helping in the codiiication of its laws. 26
