Condon, N ewhouse Deans of en DEAN HERBERT T. CONDON roamed college campi as a boy, and later deserted his first choice, law, to teach financial management. Since 1903, When he first came to the University, he has been dean of the college of eco- nomics, and during the past four years, Dean of Men. The glamor of law first appealed to Dean Newhouse, the assistant Dean of Men, but after interviewing sev- eral attorneys, he decided to become a merchant, then switched to education. DEANS DEAN FREDERICK PADELFORD of the graduate school, with early ambitions to Write, studied at Colby and Yale, receiving his doc- torate in l899. For many years he has studied Edmund Spenser, and is now compiling a ten-volume Variorurn edition of his work. CHARLES W. SMITH, contrary to his desire in early life to be a musician, attended the University of Illinois library school, re- ceiving his D. I... S. degree in 1905. Since then he has been with the University, rising from assistant librarian to associate, and finally, librarian in 1929. HARRY E. SMITH'had always expected to be a country school teacher in Indiana. But in college he changed his plans and ma- jored in economics. Now, besides being a professor of economics, he is head of the University Extension School. DEAN IVIILNOR ROBERTS, coming from a family of engineers, has always been interested in engineering. Now he is-Dean of the Col- lege of Mines. Besides this he is serving his second term' as Na- tional Director of the American Institute of Mining Engineers and holds many other important executive positions.

After teaching for one year at Annie Wright Seminary in Tacoma, she accepted a position as an assistant Dean of Women in 1918, later becoming dean. Mary l. Bash, associate Dean of Women, wanted to he a forester, but studied languages instead. She received her B. A. degree at the University. After teaching in country schools and supervising Y. W. C. A. Work on the University campus, she joined the Dean of Women's staff. STANDARDS COMMITTEE, organized under the A. W. S. constitution and made up of Women students, cooperates with the Dean of Women in making and enforcing rules governing social conduct. ,lane Warrack was chairman this year. '
