Now he is chairman of the King County Planning commission, dean of the college of engineering, and in his spare time, an amateur gardener. DEAN WILLIS L. UHL,S first ambition was to own a nursery, next to be a professional pianist, Today he :is adept at the piano and organ, dean of the school .of education, and on the board of direc- tors of the National Society for the Study of Education. DEAN HUGO WINKENWERDER of Forestry Wanted to he a minister and reform the World until he decided to become a naturalist and make it beautiful instead. He studied forestry at the University of Wisconsin, and later earned his master's degree at Yale. PROF. HENRY A. BURD wanted to be a trainman and a Chautauqua speaker. Instead he became a teacher of economics, and is direc- tor of the summer' school service and yice-president of the Na- tional Association of Marketing Teachers.:

DEA DEAN SHIRLEY COON, who once wished to be a street-car conduc- tor or a sailor, majored in history and science, taught for a while, and then drifted into economics and business. He considers busi- ness administration Hone of todayis most dynamic fields. DEAN CHARLES 'JOHNSON took up the study of pharmacy and chemistry to get away from farm work. He was the first to be elect- ed to the revision committee of the United States Pharmacopeia, determining standards of the federal food and drug laws. DEAN HAROLD SHEPHERD, with every intention of becoming an astronomer, once took a trip around the courts. He found it the most intensely interesting thing there isi' and decided to take up law. He is the youngest' dean in the University. DEAN HENRY LANDES, unlike most, has always known his voca- tion, followed it, and now after twenty years of study is dean of the college of science with a record of many important oflices be- hind him, and many honors in geology.

DEANS DEAN FREDERICK PADELFORD of the graduate school, with early ambitions to Write, studied at Colby and Yale, receiving his doc- torate in l899. For many years he has studied Edmund Spenser, and is now compiling a ten-volume Variorurn edition of his work. CHARLES W. SMITH, contrary to his desire in early life to be a musician, attended the University of Illinois library school, re- ceiving his D. I... S. degree in 1905. Since then he has been with the University, rising from assistant librarian to associate, and finally, librarian in 1929. HARRY E. SMITH'had always expected to be a country school teacher in Indiana. But in college he changed his plans and ma- jored in economics. Now, besides being a professor of economics, he is head of the University Extension School. DEAN IVIILNOR ROBERTS, coming from a family of engineers, has always been interested in engineering. Now he is-Dean of the Col- lege of Mines. Besides this he is serving his second term' as Na- tional Director of the American Institute of Mining Engineers and holds many other important executive positions.
