DEA DEAN SHIRLEY COON, who once wished to be a street-car conduc- tor or a sailor, majored in history and science, taught for a while, and then drifted into economics and business. He considers busi- ness administration Hone of todayis most dynamic fields. DEAN CHARLES 'JOHNSON took up the study of pharmacy and chemistry to get away from farm work. He was the first to be elect- ed to the revision committee of the United States Pharmacopeia, determining standards of the federal food and drug laws. DEAN HAROLD SHEPHERD, with every intention of becoming an astronomer, once took a trip around the courts. He found it the most intensely interesting thing there isi' and decided to take up law. He is the youngest' dean in the University. DEAN HENRY LANDES, unlike most, has always known his voca- tion, followed it, and now after twenty years of study is dean of the college of science with a record of many important oflices be- hind him, and many honors in geology.

MOST DECISIVE of all administrative actions since L. P. Sieg be- came the University's twenty-second president last fall was the radical revision of the University College. The new College was placed in the hands of Dean Edward H. Lauer, as dean of fac- ulties, and the University's 3,100 new students entered in the new college. - In another effort to handle the sharply mounting registration -highest in history-early in December the faculty approved noon classes for the 1935-36 year. Registration reached the all- time high of 8,800 students, and the University became the elev- enth largest college in the nation. DEAN DAVID THOMSON smiles reminiscently at the thought of glowing iron and clanging hammer because once he wanted to be a blacksmith. Instead he studied law, taught and finally became University vice presi- dent in charge of the new vocational guidance service for uundecidedi' students. EDWIN BICKNELL STEVENS decided to go to college when he was twelve years old. He went through high school in three years, and is now registrar of the University, after working his way through college clerking. HENRY COBURN ALLEN spent a few unprofitable early years and then landed a responsible job with Educational Films corporation, a cine- matic infant in 1916. One more step as general commercial manager of awestern telephone company, and now-he's University comptroller. DEAN EDWARD H. LAUER wanted to be butcher, civil engineer or history teacher. But they wouldn't let him take history, and he abandoned the other two ambitions, so he became a dean. At present he is Dean of Faculties.

DEA S DEAN RICHARD G. TYLER wanted to 'he 'a naturalist until he read a hook in which the hero was an engineer. Now he is chairman of the King County Planning commission, dean of the college of engineering, and in his spare time, an amateur gardener. DEAN WILLIS L. UHL,S first ambition was to own a nursery, next to be a professional pianist, Today he :is adept at the piano and organ, dean of the school .of education, and on the board of direc- tors of the National Society for the Study of Education. DEAN HUGO WINKENWERDER of Forestry Wanted to he a minister and reform the World until he decided to become a naturalist and make it beautiful instead. He studied forestry at the University of Wisconsin, and later earned his master's degree at Yale. PROF. HENRY A. BURD wanted to be a trainman and a Chautauqua speaker. Instead he became a teacher of economics, and is direc- tor of the summer' school service and yice-president of the Na- tional Association of Marketing Teachers.:
