BO RD OFREGE S EDWARD P. RYAN . . . Regent Ryan, who is the board's new president, represents the eastern half of the state, and is a Spokane business man and mining prop- erty executive: A New York University alumnus, he was named board president after Lewis Schwellenbach's resignation. v FACING.the board of regents this year were two problems: an unset- tled administration, and cramped quarters to handle the rapidly increasing enrollment. Following several journeys East by board members to interview possible ap- pointees, the first problem was set- tled with the appointment of L. Sieg as president of the University. The building shortage was met by the regents in coordinating fed- eral and state public works funds with the University building allot- ment to bring the campus a half- million dollar new wing to the Henry Suzzallo library. A 3150,000 Tudor-Gothic infirmary was ar- ranged for early this year, as well as the new powerhouse and a dor- mitory to house 300 women. 19 Pr-nur MACBRIDE . . . A Seattle lawyer, he is an alum- nus of the University of Iowa, of which his father was president. During his college days he was a school- male of President Sieg. He is vice-president of the board, and chairman of the finance committee. His son is a Rhodes scholar. WINLOCK MILLER . . . Scion of a pioneer Olympia fam- ily, Miller has served previously as a regent. He is a retired attorney with an honorary law degree from Whitman College, and is also a Whitman regent. He is chairman of the building and grounds committee, and on the executive and financial committees. ROBERT MONTGOMEHY . . . One of the two newspaper- men on the board and a member of the famous Puyal- lup Valley Montgomery family, Regent Montgomery publishes the Puyallup Valley Tribune. He is well known as a writer and editorialist. He serves on the lands and building and grounds committee. ALFRED SHEMANSKI . . . Regent Shemanski heads a large Seattle retail clothing store, and is prominent in civic affairs. He is chairman of the welfare committee and serves on the finance committee as well. One of the four board members who live in Seattle. - WERNER A. RUPP . . . The second newspaperman on the board comes from Grays Harbor, where he is pub- lisher of the Aberdeen World. He is chairman of the University lands committee and serves on the building and grounds committee. He was a regent during the Suzzallo administration. THOMAS BALMER . . . Most recent addition to the board of regents, Balmer was named October 4 by Governor Martin to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Lewis Schwellenbach. He is a former University law student and was Western counsel for the Great North- ern railway.
