LT James McDougal graduated from Michigan State University 970 He was commissioned through the Naval Aviation Offi- in 1 . cer Candidate program and was assigned to the Naval Flight Training command as a student. After being awarded his Flight Officer Wings he was assigned to Attack Carrier Air Wing 19 USS ORISKANY CCVA 345 Prior to reporting to staff onboard the . the University of Washington in August of 1976 he was assigned 1455 onboard the USS RANGER KCV 615 QVA . This is his last year as the Sophomore Class lnstructor teache ing the fundamentals of Seapower and Naval Weapons Systems. LT McDougal will return to the fleet this fall to Attack Squadron ONE ONE FIVE CVA 1 155 onboard the USS MIDWAY homeported in Yokosuka Japan. -uf -5 . as a Bombadier!Navigator with Attack squadron oNE Foun Five F' 5 ' 1' G. ,yum--. we 1 52. K LT Thomas R Tritz fleft5, teller of many a salty sea story, hails f m a hot, dusty southwestern town some miles west of Phoenix, ro Arizona. He was taken with blue the first time he saw it and ' 69 vowed to carry on a family tradition Qthat began in June of 19 5 to become a Naval Officer via the Naval Academy. He accom- plished his immediate goal in June 1973 and soon thereafter reported aboard the USS HENRY B. WILSON CDDG 75. He received his Surface Warfare qualification in February 1976 after n n from a Western Pacific cruise during which the Ham- retur i g merin Hank participated in the evacuation of South Vietnam and Cambodia and the rescue of the SS MAYAGUEZ. LT Tritz reported to the UW in August of 1976. As the Freshmen Class Instructor, LT Tritz leads the freshman S i and of class toward a clear Q75 understanding of the Naval ervice Naval Ship Systems. As BINNACLE advisor, he oversees the pro- d tion of the production of the Unit yearbook. uc LT Tritz will be leaving active Naval Service at the end of this year in favor of the Naval Reserve and his own business in atti- motivation. He an his wife Susan have a son, Gerry and a tude daughter, Rachel Katrina.

Class Officers A 1 Y . f wa.- .,--V. LCDR Terry R. Dettmann graduated from Marquette University with a BS in Physics and was commissioned in 1968. He then attended Naval Post Graduate School in Monterey, California, and received a Master of Science degree in Physics in 1969. He served as the Reactor Training Assistant aboard the USS ENTER- PRISE QCVN 655 in 1970. From 1971 to 1972, CDR Dettmann was a PACE Instructor in mathematics and physics at San Diego State University. Service as an instructor at the Nuclear Power Training Unit, Idaho Falls, Idaho followed in 1972. Prior to reporting to the UW in August 1977, he was the Engineering Training Assistant and Navigator aboard the USS VIRGINIA CCGN 383. LCDR dettmann's duties as Junior Instructor include instruct- ing the junior class in Celestial Navigation and the Rules of the Nautical Road, and serving as the advisor of Compass and Chart. LCDR Dettmann will be leaving Navy after this year and will be a physicist for the University's Applied Physics Lab Research and Development Group. About 9096 of the Applied Physics Lab's research is done for the Navy. LCDR Grant R. Telfer Cleftj graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy and was commissioned an Ensign in June 1963. His first assignment was First Lieutenant and Navigator on board the USS JOHN D. CRAIG CDD 8851. In January 1966 LCDR Telfer reported to the USS PRINCETON CAPD 53 for two years of duty as Communications Traffic Control Officer. His next assignment was Operations Officer of the USS WEISS QAPD 1355, and he sub- sequently served in that command as Executive Officer until mid- 1969. LCDR Telfer then entered Basic Underwater Demolition! SEAL training and graduated in April 1970. Reporting to SEAL Team ONE. He deployed to South Vietnam as a Platoon Com- mander. ln July 1971, he was assigned as Operations and Plans Officer, Naval Special Warfare Group ONE. He received orders to Commander Naval lnshore Warfare!Amphibious Group Eastern Pacific in July 1973 as Assistant Chief of Staff for Logistics. In March of 1974, LCDR Telfer assumed Command of SEAL Team ONE. He reported to the UW in September of 1976. As the Senior Instructor, LCDR Telfer teaches the senior class Naval Organization and management and the Psychology of Leadership. 1 The Destroyer at left was the subject of an explosives test which LCDR Telfer Commanded as C.O. of SEAL Team ONE.
