The Skrpper cv Captain Ronald A. Campbell, USN, was born in Tacoma, Washington, 24 May 1928. After graduation from Lincoln Park High School in Tacoma, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and subsequently was selected to attend the Naval Academy Preparation School in Bainbridge, Maryland. Entering the United States Naval Academy with a Secretary of the Navy appointment, he graduated in June 1952 and was awarded a Bachelor of Science degree. Service education included Officer's Nuclear Power School and the College of Naval Warfare, Naval War College, Newport, Rhode Island. In August 1967, he received a Master of Science degree in International Affairs from George Washington Univer- sity. As a Junior Officer, he served in USS STICKELL CDD 8885, USS MCKEAN CDDR 7847, and USS COOK CAPD 1309 during several deployments to the Western Pacific before taking Command of USS SNOHOMISH COUNTY CLST 11263. I-le alS0 served as Executive Officer, USS BENNER CDD 8079 which deployed to the Western Pacific and which provided gunfire support to South Vietnamese forces. In 1967 he became the first Commanding Officer, U.S. Naval Support Facility, Cam Ranh Bay, South Vietman, and was awarded the Bronze Star for this period of service. Command of USS GYATT CDD 7125 followed and of USS VOGELGESANG CDD 8625. Captain Campbell served as Director of Candidate Guidance at the U.S. Naval Academy, Annapolis, prior to coming I0 the University. He assumed command of the Naval ROTC Unit and was appointed Professor of Naval Science, Universill' of Washington in September 1975.
