Colonel William H. Rice, USMC, Commanding Officer, Naval ROTC Unit and Professor of Naval Science, University of Washington, assumed command of the Unit in August of 1972. Colonel Rice was commissioned in June of 1951 through the NROTC Program, after baccalaureate studies at Duke University. Ile completed studies at the Naval WM College in 1971 and was awarded the Master of Science Degree in International Relations by The George Washington University in that year. Colonel Rice served as an artillery officer in Korea in 1952 and 1953, and later served in various infantry and artillery billets. Returning to combat service in 1966 in South Vietnam, he was first assigned as Coordinator of Fire Support for the 53rd Marine Division. Later reassigned as commander of an artillery battalion, the 1st Battalion, Twelfth Marines, he completed this tour of duty in locations along the Hdemilitarized zone and was awarded the Legion of Merit for services rendered. The eolonel's previous assignment was in Okinawa, where he served as Plans Officer for the Commanding General, Ill Marine Amphibious Force. 5

He entered the Navy as an Aviation Cadet in 1953 from the University of Western Kentucky. Designated a Naval Aviator in June 1954 he served in carrier squadrons VS-20, VS-21, VT-27, VS-38, VS-41 and commanded VAW-116 aboard the USS Coral Sea. Prior to reporting to the University of Washington he was the US Defense Attache attached to the American Embassy Munrovia. He holds a B. S. and M. S. in Management from the US Postgraduate School, Monterey. The Executive Officer and his wife Jean have two sons Jim and Eric. His hobbies include hunting, skiing and float plane flying. 6 ax gf 1--H i K
