Religion is the mother WI dreams. Over the gray world, ruined by deluge and death, it has sought ever, and fzund, the arching rainbow zjhope. 1 , 1 RELIGION A. E. Hayden The Ceremonial Mace, although a general symbol of leadership, has deep and particular meaning 'to the Class of 1927, and to all of us at the Uni- versity of Vermont, past, present and future. This meaning is portrayed in the four sculptured sides of the Mace. The first side is the center section of Old Mill with Mount Mansfield in the back- ground, symbolizing the founding of the Uni- versity, and also that in 1927 Old Mill was the only center the students knew. Ira Allen Chapel, symbolic of religion and spiritual guidance is rep- resented on the second side. The Chapel wras also dedicated in 1927 and was the feature of the 1927 ARIEL. Three students reaching upwards to a lamp symbolize learning on the third side of the Mace. The fourth side is a group of four persons gathered in a manner symbolizing friendship, and it was friendship which inspired the Class of 1927 to create this Memorial Mace.
