Although the mace was once associated with mon- archs and kings, it is now the symbol of all people. As Dr. Charlotte Brown said in her presentation of the Mace to the University of Vermont last May, The power - the dignity - of a whole com- munity are summed up in the symbolism of any mace. VVhen it is in action, there all the people are - in parliaments or in academic processionsg and when it rests, kings and comnioners, presidents and freshmen, passing by, still should see in it the goodly friendship of all for whom it stands.
