STUDENT GOVERNMENT Second row-Eichel, Bristol, Parizeau, McGarry, Stevens Front row-Donnelly, Campbell, Hackett, Earle, McLaren, Hopkinson Student Government was established at U. V. M. in 1942 to provide a central organization on campus which would take over those college duties previously under various student or faculty bodies. The business of this organization is carried on by an executive council of fourteen members which consists of a president, vice-president, secretary, treasurer, four representatives each from the junior and senior classes, and two from the sopho- more class. Student committees include finance, pep, religious life, social functions and cultural affairs. This year Student Government has sponsored a spirited campaign in an attempt to arouse inter- est in the Honor System. Various forums have been held, and the pros and cons vigorously pre- sented. In November a Religious Life Parley was held with clergymen from Catholic, jewish, Con- gregational and Abyssinian denominations pres- ent. MLlCh thought-provoking discussion was stirred up by this conference, and a movement for Greek Letter reform started. Countless small services have been performed by Student Gov- ernment-everything from opening the Student Lounge on Sunday afternoon to systematizing the bulletin boards. V. M. This body is made up of six members, three seniors and three juniors nominated and elected by the executive committee of Student Govern- ment. The court has jurisdiction over breaches of Stu- dent Government rules and any cases of dis- honesty. It is possible for any campus organiza- tion such as Pan-Hellenic or Interfraternity Coun- cil to appeal for a decision, Student Court, based on the principle of student enforcement of student legislation, represents a milestone in the self-government toward which U.
