An organization known as the Pan-Hellenic Asso- ciation and made up of representatives from each sorority on campus, makes and enforces rushing rules and regula- tions Which must under penalty be carried out by every girl on campus. The Pan-Hellenic Association does still more however in that it promotes school spirit, stands for scholarship, for the guardianship of good health, for Whole hearted cooperation With our college ideals for student life, for the maintenance of fine social stand- ards and for the serving to the best of our ability our college community. lnterfraternity Committee Last fall, a small group of fraternity men on the campus decided that it would be a good idea to organize a committee to meet War-time fraternity needs at U. V. M. Up to this time, the Greek Letter organiza- tions had been wholly inactive this year. A meeting was held, and plans were made for a mass meeting with the freshmen in order to instruct them concerning rushing procedure. At the mass meeting, Dean Swift, Pro- fessor Rowell and Archie Post spoke on fraternity life, the purpose of fraternities and intramurals. An accelerated rushing program was mapped out and explained. lt was decided to call the organization the Inter-Fraternity Committee, to dif- erentiate it from the now-extinct Council. The committee handles all fraternity af- fairs, the fraternities working as a single unit, rather than as individual groups. Some were Rosie, the Riveter, some slimmed down their waistlines digging potatoes, and still others led the life of Riley. A sudden but agreeable change was the sight of men again: namely, the Army, clad in khaki. Oct. I. Everybody said hi and 'Ahello to pals at the picnic for the freshmen, given by the Honorary Societies. Boy, the hotdogs were swell, and the chocolate milk too! But best of all was Professor Dean's hello to the freshmen. Then, we all got in the groove singing U. V. M. songs. Oct. 2. At last, the Freshman Mixer, an event which all the freshmen look forward to, for now they meet the eligible men of the campus for the first big act to- gether. Air Corps and A. S. T. P. were welcome guests. A great time was had by all. Oct. 16. Hobo Day found the girls in various attires, including pigtails, crazy hats, and dungarees. Lunch at Waterman kept in the spirit by giving every other girl a fork-they were the lucky ones. The true pur- pose came to the foreground in the afternoon when we all cleaned house for W. S. S. P. Qturning. in S120 to start it offj. This showed what the girls can do when there is a shortage of help. Later we went to our sorority houses for cider and doughnuts. ln the evening came the Beanless Bean Supper. Prizes were given for the best hobo costumes and to top it all off, the faculty showed its dramatic ability by putting on a skit, Do Flies Have a Love-Life? Dancing followed-both round and square, with real old-time corn for music. Oct. 23. 'AApple-Picking. Apples and more apples. with no one to pick them. U. V. M. students came to the rescue at several orchards around Burlington. Sponsored by the Outing Club, three truckloads of girls, dressed in blue jeans and old plaid shirts, set out for an afternoon of apple picking. Competition was keen to see who could pick the most. With stomachs full of apples, arms and legs aching from the exercise, and hands black as soot, the girls arrived back in Bur- lington later that afternoon. W. S. SAP. benefited from the money which the girls earned. Oct. 24. The gala fall Mortar Board dance, a semi- formal occasion, was held in the men's gym. Mortar Board dances, sponsored by the senior honorary so- ciety, are a great tradition at U. V. M. A girl-ask- boy dance, the girls took the lead. Y. W. C. A. has done a marvelous job this year under the leadership of the able President, Esther Gus- tafson. The Y. W. girls help at the Community Center and have worked generously for G. S. O., serving supper or looking glamorous at Saturday night dances with equal ease. The World Student Service Fund began with an all-campus drive as everyone recalls. A great deal -118- of the money was taken in by solicitation, prominent advertising, and contributions by the various organ- izations on campus. Many benent performances were given, and the Air Corps and A. S. T. P. men gave their share for the drive. With the money and the pledges we will have raised about Sl,300! Nou. 6. Gold Pompoms, evergreens s p e l l i n g U. V. M., and gold candles were the motif for the Staff and Sandal dance. We all had fun. The Re- freshment Committee served the U. V. lVl.'s tradi- tional punch of ice cream and ginger ale. Nou. 27. Snow on the windows, evergreen boughs bedecking the mantel, with skis and skates as added atmosphere transformed the Student Lounge into a winter paradise at the Sophomore Aide Dance. Dec. 4. With winter well on its way, the Outing Club got out its skis, snowshoes, and sleds to make Waterman attractive for a dance with Joe Allen fur- nishing the music. Cider and doughnuts made it even more fun. Dec. 12. On Sunday afternoon, the U. V. M. choir and orchestra gave the annual Christmas Con- cert. This showed the hard practice of these or- ganizations, and as usual, we came out feeling that the world couldn't help getting straightened out. Dec. 17. The Friday before vacation, we came out in ski clothes and lungs, and started on our annual choral singing. We divided into two groups and covered the whole campus, including the Army bar- racks. Cold toes thawed out at Waterman while the Sophomore Aides served coffee and doughnuts. Dec. 19. Vacation! Everybody went home to get rid of the Hu! Jan. 15, 1944. After vacation, the Alpha Chis started things rolling again, putting on a No Shoe or Sock Dance. Ski clothes were worn Cpermis- sion had been grantedj. Punch and cookies were served and the Student Lounge was festively decor- ated with skis, sleds, and pine. Jan. 22. lnvitation needed. ,Yes, only fraternity men, either civilian, Air Corps, or A. S. T. P. were invited to attend the fraternity formal sponsored by the Lambda Iota fraternity. Banners representing all the fraternities on the Hill covered the walls of the Student Lounge. A band, Jack Collins', furnished the music. The fellows had a neat time meeting fraternity men from other colleges. Jan. 29. A sigh of relief! Exams over again for another semester. What could be more appropriate than a post-exam dance? The Alpha Xi's who spon- sored the dance, were most successful. Penguins, walruses, polar bears, and other northern scenes on posters bedecked the hall. Feb. 1. Well, back to the same old routine after exams. To start off--the new editorial staff for the Cynic was appointed with Eran Donahue as Editor- in-Chief. The annual banquet for the retiring staff -119- SOPHOMCRE A105 CLEAN-UP I - E CHROMNG A Tl . I .5 Home FOR CHFQSTMHS was held at the Hotel Vermont with speeches by the incoming and outgoing staffs and President Millis. Feb. 3. Louis Fischer came to the lra Allen Chapel to tell us about the trials of Russia. The Interna- tional Relations Club sponsored this enlightening talk. Feb. 5. The Pan-Hellenic Formal was held in the Student Lounge with many beautiful flowing gowns adding to the gaiety of the Blues theme for decora- tions. The Air Corps came through, too, and every- one had a super time. Feb. I2. The Student Lounge was the scene of a Valentine dance given by the Health Council. The hearts and lace gave the appropriate atmosphere and the proceeds went to the Health Council Fund for students. Feb. 18. W. A. A. sponsored their annual Splash Party at the We sure had fun with all the games and races, even if the weather was below zero. Feb. 20-27. Brotherhood Week. A trio of speakers were at Convocation promoting inter-faith fellow- ship, and students led a service on Prayer on Sunday, with inter-faith chapel on the following Tuesday. Cafe Society came to Vermont on March 4 when Pi Beta Phi sponsored a dance at the Lounge. Ray Dorey, former vocalist for Benny Goodman, and Jack Collins' orchestra gave out strains of melody while cigarette girls and beauties passed between the tables. Carmen Miranda was there and the hu- morous side was presented with a ballet. Mar. II. Delta Phi Epsilon changed the Lounge into a softly lit college hang-out with banners from other schools all over the walls and windows. An added attraction was the choosing of Josie College, Irene Reitnauer. Mar. 13. Started the campaigns for the royalty of our festival week-end-Kake Walk. What excite- ment! The names of Betty, Spike and Ruthie were seen every place you could imagine, with parades and escapades all week. Ruthie Jordan, who promised A's, Cuts and Vacations all year round, was elected Queen and Bish McGill, one of our Medics, reigned with her over festivities of Friday night. Barbara Fiske and Bob Pond sure gave us what we wanted. We had ice sculptures, wonderful music by Joe and his Co-ed Band, skits, southern scenes, Walkin' Po' De Kake, and dancing after to the music of Jack Collins and his orchestra. Gollyl A 2 o'clock night! On Saturday afternoon sororities held open house and tea dances. In the evening the Annual Sugar Party was held in honor of J. L. Hills, former Dean, withl as much fun, stickiness, and snow-balling as usua . Mar. 25. Carnival was put on by Tau Lambda Mu in the Student Lounge. Everyone had a wonderful time and spent millions in pennies. Highlight of the -120- evening was the choosing of the Kadet King, who was crowned Lieutenant Giamiol Mar. 26-31. Spring Fever hit the campus, the Cynical Cynic Staff went crazy, Dead Eye Mul- holland was decreed the champion marble shooter, and everyone was madly writing English 7 term papers. Several good speakers spoke during the week on post-war problems: a debate by Paul Hagen and Wilhelm Solzbacher and a lecture by Vernon Nash on world government. Apr. 1. Spring Vacation! Student Government got us an extra day, tool Apr. 11. Everyone back at school, to rest up after a strenuous vacation. Apr. 14. Band concert given at the Y. M. C. A. by Joe Lechnyr's Co-ed Band. The Pep Committee of Student Government certainly did a good thing when they started the Band. And can those co-eds play! Apr. 15. Staff and Sandal sponsored Lilac Day, held each year in honor of U. V. M.'s Hrst Dean of Women. Miss Hoffman's dance workshop did a pro- fessional job, creating dance routines around the theme of the Pour Ereedoms. The choral speaking was something new, and very good. The beautiful queen of Lilac Day, Shirley Buckingham, and her court reigned over the festivities. Reception afterward for everyone who had helped with Lilac Day. Apr. 14-15. W. S. G. A. Conference at U. V. M. The inmates of Delta Psi were evacuated to make room for the delegates from the nine co-educational New England colleges. The opening address was given by Mrs. W. H. Wills. Conference President was Barbara Hall. Apr. ZZ-27. Swell music, wonderful decorations. all the girls looking like illustrations in Vogue-the sorority dances were a great success, in spite of the diminishing number of cadets. May 1. Eounder's Day. The seniors put on their robes for the first time: the faculty looks very im- pressive with their gowns and hoods. Members of honorary societies for next year were announced at chapel. May 7. The Glee Club, under the direction of Pro- fessor Bennett, put on an excellent production in con- cert form of the Purcelle opera, Dido 26 Aeneas. May 19-24. Exams again! Social life stopped, and a semester's work was done in a week, as usual. Groans were heard all over the campus. Universal question, How'd you hit it? May Z7-29. A regular, old-fashioned Commence- ment, with all the trimmings. Alumni luncheon, Class Day, Lafayette and Ira Allen capped and gowned, President's Reception, Senior Prom, Bac- calaureate, and Commencement exercises.
