UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO ENGINEERING YEARBOOK 73-74 editor: ANNA DUNETS staff : SHELDON BORNSTEIN SHARON CROSS SILVANA Dl CARLO INES POPIG and chief running dog lackey PHIL EDENS photographers : ERIC HARTWELL DAVE ANDERSON GLENN SCOTT WILLIAM CIJNTJE cover design by ADRIENNE BRAITMAN DEAN ETKIN Well, the Centennial Year is over, and it was a good year to be at Skule. Not only was it replete with the usual package of ' goodies ' produced by student ef forts--f rom Oktoberfest in the autumn to the Grad Ball in the spring--but there were the special events--Open House, Centennial 1 ectu res-- that added so much to the quality of life at Skule in 73 7 . To top it all off, it looks 1 i ke a good year for jobs too, in spite of (or maybe because of?) the energy problem. For those of you who are graduating, the four years on which you can look back are among the most momentous that Skule has ever had. Not only did they embrace the once- i n-a-hundred years centennial, but also the change to the term system with its new concepts of evaluation and promotion, the changes in the governing system of the Faculty (council and committees) and of the University itself. For the first time in the history of the U.of T. , students and alumni were formally added to the Council of the Faculty, and staff and students were placed on the Governing Council of the University. The closing years of our first century have indeed been years of great rate of change, not only for Skule, but for technology (pocket electronic calculators were unknown when you became freshmen) and for society at large. Both as an individual and as a collective man has always needed to meet the challenges presented by changing personal and societal environments. You, perhaps more than any previous graduates, will have to have the the capacity to confront and surmount these challenges, to accept rapid change as part of the natural order. I wish you well in your first job and in those that follow, and in all else that you may undertake. STEVE FIELD Once again, following a trad- ition rejuvenated last year, the Engineering Society presents to you, a Yearbook. It is a portfolio of people and events - the non-academi c half of your University education. The Engineering Alumni, by far the most dynamic of all the Alumni associated with the University, not only maintained their excellent rapport with the entire Faculty, but have made special efforts to ensure the efficient operation of the Society. With advice, information and a variety of services, the Alumni certainly deserve our thanks and a great deal more credit than they actually receive for the work they do. Professors, associate professors, lecturers and demonstrators, as well as the members of the Faculty Office and tfe Dean ' s Office collectively have all maintained the high standard of educ- ation that has brought both esteem and respect to the Faculty. Dean Etkin, in his freshman year, has more than met the challenge of such a demanding position and, in my opinion, will lead the Faculty with the enthusiasm and professionalism so representative of the Deans of this Faculty. But the Faculty moves as a function of the work achieved within staf f student committees and although we do not have parity on these, we enjoy advantages But what about the students? Hesitant to get involved but certainly willing to take advantage of someone else ' s hard work. Ask yourself what you do with your spare time. Look through this Yearbook and see what has passed you by this year. Will it pass by you next year? Become an integral part of Skule - get involvedl It will certainly be a benefit to both your- self and the Society in years to come. we teach you to lead. Get involved with the Canadian Forces. Graduates: Graduate engineers may serve as commissioned officers in an Engineering occu- pation such as Maritime Engineering, Communications-Electronics Engineering, Land Ord- nance Engineering, Aerospace Engineering or Military Engineering. FOUNDING DAY March 29, 1973 saw the celebration of 100 years of Engineering at U.of T. Subsequently, classes were cancelled for a whole half Qi) day. Many of the events which took place are captured fo r eternity on these pages, and many others remain known only to those who took part in them and who doubtless are glad no photographer was around to witness the event. The SPS Chorus (Coarse) entertains the assembled multitude Paul Rimstead made honorary member of the LGMB Capers on Centennial Eve Clearing the roads to make room for celebrating Engineers Ralph is retired to greener pastures outside the Mechanical Building Engineering Society Executive The Executive took office in early March, 1973, a time when enthusiasm spark- ed by the Centennial events of previous months, was at its highest. During the Centennial year, many traditional events, programs and capers had been re- juvenated and the Executive reasoned that, along with providing new and different events and programs, it s uld also try to improve upon the previous year’s events. By improving the quality, the Executive hoped to maintain the Skul e spirit. Centennial enthus iasm -dwi nd 1 ed over the summer and to rekindle a Centennial spirit would be a monstrous feat. The Executive and Council, made up of enthus- iastic people willing to help with the events, re- signed themselves to plan events to maximize student participation and Skule spirit. II i I i ! The entire year ' s activities were planned during the summer and in August, the students were presented with a Skule calendar. Social activities, professional development, conferences, Centennial Lecture series, a new Dean, a first year Bookstore, Orientation and Hart House Farm, Toike 0 i ke and Tiny Toikes, Women in Engineering Dinner, Car Rally, Oktoberfest, Open House, Homecoming and the Float Parade, Slave Auction, Cannonball, Chariot Race, Skule Nite, OAUES, CCES, Elections and Dance, S Dance, Grad Ball, Rites of Spring, Faculty Council, SAC, Blue and Gold, LGMB, BFC, SPSC, Alumni. There was certainly a great deal of interest in the many events held this year. Unfortunately there was very little interest in the actual planning of these events. The few people who worked on the plans deserve a great deal of credit for their time and effort - time and effort spent so the majority could have a real ly good time. The problems this year, and the experience requir- ed to handle them will certainly be of value to the new Executive and Counci 1 . We of the Executive this year can only hope that the information is bene- ficial in planning next year ' s events for you, the student body. But success comes from partic- ipation. So get out and take part and give the Engineering Society the support it needs and deserve and the best of 1 uck to al 1 next year . They were enjoyed by all (who went). We certainly hope so! They were organized so that everyone would have fun. For those of you who didn ' t attend or maybe don ' t remember these events (eg. Oktoberfest) here is a note on each to inform you and remind you what happened. The Engineering Car rally was held on Sunday the first day of October. The purpose was not to win by speed but by wit. If you had wit you could answer all those ridiculously obvious(?) questions. It was a perfect day for a ride and the wine and cheese party at the end. Congradulations to the top three! The Hustling Dances were revived on Fri. Sep. 21st and was carried out in the best of Skule tradition. Star was an excellent group to which everyone danced the night away. Who couldn ' t have had fun where there were lots of beer, beer, women and song. Oktoberfest . M Need I say more? I guess I should for those with blurred memories. We went thru 75 kegs of heer, that could explain the blurs . We had a polka contest which could explain the bruises; no one knows who won. We all had fun which needn ' t be explained. By the way it was on Fri . Oct . 5th at Hart House. With the theme and completion date established, each Department undertook the task of constructing a colourful, factual and interesting dis- play representative of eng- ineering in that particular department. Special themes, Environment, Materials, Transportation, Women in Engineering, and, of course, the Alumni Display were also represented in many individual displays . Last May, a Committee under the direction of Professor I. Rowe (Electrical) and Professor M. Davis (Civil) met to plan an Engineering Open House. The Committee consisted of rep- resentatives from every discipline and division of Engineering, the Alumni, the students, the Media Resources Centre and, most important, a public relations company. The first, and perhaps the most difficult task fac- ing the committee was to select a theme; one that was pertinent to the work, yet also illus- trating the role of Engineer- ing and Engineers within Society. The theme selected was quite suitably ENGINEER- ING FOR SOCIETY - Challenge and Achievement. It was agreed to hold Open House from October 18-20, corres- ponding to the Alumni Cen- tennial celebrations and the Homecoming Football Game. L- Originally, each department was to have set-up a central display illustrating all aspects of research within that Department. Unfortunately, each Depart- ment strove diligently to outdo the rest, creating such a mass of displays in one building, that stu- dents rarely had enough chance to see the others. Thanks from the student guides go to Geological and Engineering Science for their simple and central dis- plays . On the afternoon of October 18, Dean Etkin and Mr. John Cowan Engineering Alumni Association President, using an acetylene torch, cut through a reinforcing rod in a most appropriate opening ceremony. Two young visitors concerned with the environment were then given a guided tour of the displays. They de- monstrated, as did every visitor, a keen interest in and a better awareness of the role of Engineering in society - making the Open House a success in every respect . HOMECOMING HEAR YE! HEAR YE I PLEASE, PLEASE DON ' T SAVE HIM The Homecoming Dance on Sat Oct 20th after the Queens-Toronto Game was very successful. Alumni, students and staff attended; it proved to be a jovial gathering with dancing , drinking and joke telling (and what jokes those Alumni tell, why I remember one that would make even you blush! ) For your next group outing... The most novel (and winning! ) chariot came from the first year class. How do I get myself into this. Cannonball on Sat. Nov, 24th at Hart House was full of tradition and fun. In the course of the evening we held the Intercourse Competition won by the Mechanical Club; the choosing of Miss Cannonball; and the famous Cannon blast following the Thrice award winning Lady Godiva Memorial Band who once again showed us how to liven up any crowd. But who needed livening up with a group like Brussell Sprouts playing. CANNON DUEL During the ' N’th annual Cannon duel between U.of T. engineers and Ryerson engineers the out cum was 1 victory and 1 loss for both skules. This was due to the fact that when they visited us we won and when we visited them they won. Who said ENGINEERS were not DEMOCRATIC . Due to a lack of personnel in the Social Committee, activities in the spring term were few and far between. The Winter Carnival was cancelled due to a lack of winter, warm weather and no snow. The first event held in the spring was the First Year Pub put on in the Annex on February 8th. Anyone who was there enjoyed themselves as large amounts of beer were consumed and even more was spilt. With the arrival of a new Social Chairman late in February, the Election’s Dance, March 1st, came off largely successful. Rites of Spring, March 22nd and 23rd, our spring Oktoberfest was another large Engineering drunk and once again Hart House has sworn never to let us poor Engineers back. Ha, Ha. GOLDES ASSOCIATES LTD. 279 Eglinton East Toronto, Ontario 486- 0911 I ; i Medsman and victims Bruiser and Sandy ... it was decided that Skule Nite would be revived for the centennial year ... for perhaps the very last time. Skule Nite 7T3 program But no. Skule Nite 7T3 immediately be- gat Skule Nite 7T4, and with a whole year to put this epic together, it turned out even better than the first epic. And that brings us to the best news of all - it looks as if the Skule Nite tradition is back to stay. The main commodity contributing to the success of Skule Nite was the enthusiasm and spirit of the en- tire motley crew. As usual, theatrical Rule No. 1 was obeyed (i.e. half the props shall be built in the last week) And while the stage crew hammered in the bowels of Sanford Fleming, the actors were in Cody Hall applying Rule No. n (i.e. reherse each scene until you ' ve lost track of where the jokes are.) At the same time, the producer ran back and forth between the two buildings, pulling his hair out, and counting dead piano players. And somehow, all these diverse activities melted together on February 13, l t, 15. and 16 to produce a truly great show. Even the cast thought it was great when they saw the instant replay. The greatest thanks should go to ' de boss Rick Fletcher who perfected the art of surviving one crisis after another without being packed off to the Clarke In- stitute. Thanks are also extended to Sheryl Prowse (director) and Sylvia Gibb (assistant screamer) and to Torben Frost for letting the cast play with his train and other neat stuff. The task of producing Skule Nite 7T4 required a tremendous effort from the en- tire gang of idiots, but the applause at the final curtain call made it all worth- while. Teams from I.E. par- ticipated in a range of sports from football to basketball. Our foot- ball team once again emerged victorious, and the new Industrial Engi- neering basketball team the Optinals are undefeated as we go to press.. Industrial Engineers are most enthusiastic about intramural hockey. An Industrial hockey tournament is planned where teams from second, third, and fourth year compete for free beer. Due partially to the high stakes we expect to have a fierce competion. Several ski trips were organized, from what I have heard however Jean- Claude has no need to worry. The club ' s activities were not limited to athletics. Activities star- ted early in the year with a club smoker. The dinner held later in the year at the Swiss Chalet provided the setting for Industrial Enginee- ring ' s JOE CLUB AWARDS . Industrial Engineers may remember the previoufily mentioned events but they will certainly remember 1974 as the year the student common room was closed for six weeks and card games had to resume in the corridor. It is a pleasant thought that the Industrial Club is likely to demon- strate future success if the chariot built by the class of 7T6 is any indication of the SKULE SPIRIT possessed by Industrial Engineers. After a slow start we finally gain- ed first place in league play. However, the end came in the playoff final where we lost 0-1 to Erindale. Steve Mirkopoulos and Mike Kozak were chosen as M.V.P. 1 S. The powerful Junior Engineer- ing was unfortunate in their playoff against Med ' s when they were scored uDon in the last minute. Eng III also made the play- offs, but lost in the semi- finals to a more physical SGS team . The coming season will require many replacements on the 3 teams for graduat- ing players. We look for- ward to your continued support on and off in the field. RUGGER The Engineering Rugger Teams proved that they are a power to contend with espec- ially in the years to come. The Senior recorded 8 wins, I loss and I tie, plus they captured the coveted Nankivell Cup. The Junior Team managed to put forth a tremendous spirited side. This finally brought about results in that they won their semi-final game against a powerful Trinity side. However, luck and spirit was not enough to overthrow the more experienced Sr. team in the final. The Juniors will supply the Senior Team with good rugger players to replace the graduating players . FOOTBALL If the football games had been 30 minutes instead of kO the Engineers would have com- piled a 3-3 record. As it was they finished with 1 win and 5 losses. The play of the team wa s not as poor as it might appear and except for a few lapses they would have easily made the playoffs. Since a low of scoring only 1 point a few years ago, the team is st- eadily improving, and barring any unforseen circumstances, they should provide a serious challenge for the Mulock Cup in coming years. Jim Reininger was voted by his teammates to receive the Phene Memorial Tro- phy as the team ' s most valuable pi ayer . HOCKEY The junior engineering hockey team was well on its way to winning their league. At press time just prior to the playoffs the team finished its reagular season with a record of 15 wins and only 1 loss. The senior engineering hockey team had a miserable year with a record of 3 wins and 13 defeats in their schedule. VOLLEYBALL When the 73 7 volleyball season began, Engineering had been defending champions for the past 20 consecutive years. However, as the playoffs came to a close, Eng. II was matched against Erindale who had been the runner-up the past 4 years. Erindale took the first game 15 13. fn the second game, Engineering won 15“12. In the third game, the lead see-sawed back and forth until the score was 1 3 1 2 for Erinda le. They finally grabbed the last 2 points. Although Engineering was finally dethroned, it will never cease to be the No. 1 contender of the Victoria Staff Trophy and its record of 20 consecutive championships can never be broken by any team in any sport. ft ' ) Every taste a great taste at Division of Television Accessories Tubes Ltd. The basketball season was completed in the fall with a 3 win, 2 tie and 5 loss record. Despite this, they made the playoffs but were eliminated by first place Erindale. The Hockey team, the first sport for women Eng. managed to strike terror into the hearts of the interfaculty B league. Tromping on competitors and challenging A league teams and professors for scrimages, placed the Eng. team first in its division. Mommy Mommy I missed! Her best end always faces forward. Volleyball, a traditional male Eng. strength, may prove to be a stronghold for women also. Two interfaculty teams wedged themselves into a large league with the first team making the Playoffs. Eng. also showed strength in interfaculty aquaticsr Placing third overall in a speed swimming meet, an interesting feat with a three swimmer team that wins a medley relay. A good showing was also made in individual synchronized swimming and diving competition. Our notable intercollegiate competitor was Sue Salari who Figure skated for the University this year just to practice for right defence on the Hockey team. 1 NORTHWESTERN AVENUE • TORONTO 337 ONTARIO • CANADA SEWERS - WATERMAINS - ROAD WORK MACHINERY MOVING Telephone 681-5880 ■OC7 BRADDOCK OPTICAL 280 BLOOR ST., WEST w MEMICR TEL: 962-2020 CONTACT LENS OFFICE, 170 ST.
