Sports Third In Nation The pressure was on the half dozen men on the Broncs' sched- ule of track and cross country events In the spring Pan Am's Juan Garza glided over the extremely hilly course at the Drake relays Marathon Championship in Des Moines. His time was two hours and 32 minutes to finish third in the country. The winner only managed a 2:25 finish. At the San Antonio roadrace competition Garza pulled six of his teammates to finish among the top ll in the 50-runner field. Alonzo Pena of Pan Am ran third in the long test and team test and teammate Gonzalo fLeftyj Gonzalez took fourth. Abel Villarreal was sixth, Gilbert Martinez seventh, Ramiro Dav- ila l0th and Ramiro Ramirez llth. Garza won the 20-29 age group as well as the individual race. Pena captured the under- 19 age group championship. Coach Jimmy Skaines consid- ered the season an exceptional one, especially since success was realized with a such a small number of participants. a. Abel Villarreal contributed to the team's suc- cess at San Antonio. b. Alonzo Pena's efforts played an integral role in the Broncs' winning at San Antonio. .JJ c. Sports Redoubtable Linksters Sweeping past 20 of the 22 teams at the St. Thomas Intercollegiate Invitational, the PAU linksters moved on to capture the title at the Trinity Intercollegiate and the Jimmy Demaret Collegiate Gold Classic. El Rancho Viejo Country Club was the scene of the Jimmy Demaret. Some compare Ran- cho Viejo to the most formidable course in Texas-the Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth. PAU's No. 2 team at the Demaret surged with a fine 316 score to win the collegiate divi- sion by eight strokes over the University of New Mexico. Leading the Broncs to victory was Jerry Smith, whose incredi- ble final round stunned his com- petitors. Smith carded a final round of 73 at the 'AEI Diablof, the most demanding of Rancho Viejols twin courses. At that event during the Spring of '74, PAU battled the top col- legiate teams in North America. The Pan Am International Inter- collegiate is one of this conti- nent's most glamorous tourna- ments, played in the mountain- valley set Club Campestre, Mon- terrey, Mexico. In their continued effort to help pan the Americas through golf competition, the Broncs already have scheduled their third annual International Intercolle- giate Golf Tournament for Spring 75. a. The Broncs' 1974-75 roster included: Coach Oton CTonyJ Guerrero, Jesse Lucio, Allen J ones, Jerry Smith, Jose Martinez, Bruce Martins. b.
