Sports Third In Nation The pressure was on the half dozen men on the Broncs' sched- ule of track and cross country events In the spring Pan Am's Juan Garza glided over the extremely hilly course at the Drake relays Marathon Championship in Des Moines. His time was two hours and 32 minutes to finish third in the country. The winner only managed a 2:25 finish. At the San Antonio roadrace competition Garza pulled six of his teammates to finish among the top ll in the 50-runner field. Alonzo Pena of Pan Am ran third in the long test and team test and teammate Gonzalo fLeftyj Gonzalez took fourth. Abel Villarreal was sixth, Gilbert Martinez seventh, Ramiro Dav- ila l0th and Ramiro Ramirez llth. Garza won the 20-29 age group as well as the individual race. Pena captured the under- 19 age group championship. Coach Jimmy Skaines consid- ered the season an exceptional one, especially since success was realized with a such a small number of participants. a. Abel Villarreal contributed to the team's suc- cess at San Antonio. b. Alonzo Pena's efforts played an integral role in the Broncs' winning at San Antonio. .JJ c. Representing the Broncs in track and field action were Gonzalo Gonzalez, Juan Garza, Ramiro Davila. Alonzo Pena, Gilbert Martinez and Abel Villarreal. d. Pan Am freshman Gilbert Martinez pulled for the Broncs when they grabbed the road-race competition team honors. b. Active with the victorious Broncs at San Antonio was Ramiro Davila. Davila's season included the mile and three mile competition combination. c. J uan Garza was triumphant at the San Anto- nio and the Houston Marathons and set another track record when he ran the three mile in 14:24. d.
