NCAA History Winning more games than any team in Texas' collegiate base- ball history, Pan American Uni- versity rolled to a record of 50 wins, 11 losses during the 1974 baseball season. Al Ogletree coached the Broncs into the NCAA District 6 play- offs for the fifth consecutive sea- son. Shortstop Ricky Brockway became the No. 1 base stealer in major-college history when he stole 61 bases for Pan Am during the season. However, during the College World Series in June, Orlando Gonzales of Miami fFloridaJ University stole his 62nd base to eclipse Brockway's record by one. Despite their all-time record number of victories, the Broncs encountered trouble in the play- offs. They lost a 3-2 thriller to Louisiana Tech, then were elimi- nated by the University of Texas Longhorns, who made it to the College World Series although Texas, too, lost to Louisiana Tech. Tommy Simpson broke one of PAU's oldest baseball records in 1974 when he slugged 13 dou- bles. Brockway established records for games played 1615, runs 1571, and hits f61J as well as stolen bases. The Broncs produced a 50-9 reg- ular-season record and were nationally ranked despite having a predominately junior team. , .... ?.,- ,,. , 1 , I-:M--' U 9 . ,l- 'i . , 'tu it--+ t'-wi' ir ef. 6 1 vt, ' ' -. . .A , 4-4+ a.
