Sports Numero Uno Surprising everyone-except, possibly, themselves-the Pan American University basketball players set the U.S. sports wires on fire in l975. Coach Abe Lemons expected to have a rebuilding season with a mostly junior team fone senior startedl that never had played as a unit. So he scheduled 15 road games versusjust I2 at home. We're about five years ahead of schedule, Lemons moaned when the Broncs promptly put it all together and won 18 of their first 19 games. It was a happy moan, however. I've never had a team play as well on the road, said Lemons, who was coaching his 20th season of major-college basketball. The Broncs won 10 of their first ll road tests. After losing a disputed 70-68 heartbreaker at TCU in Fort Worth, the Broncs reeled off 17 straight wins as the PAU year- book reached its deadline. Marshall Rogers ranked in the top IO nationally with his 26- points-plus scoring average. Gil- bert King gained the top 10 nationally by averaging 14 rebounds. And star playmaker guard Jesus CChuyj Guerra, averaging nine assists per game, might have ranked No. l nation- ally, except the NCAA hadn't got around to keeping assists sta- tistics yet. All three Bronc statis- tical stars are juniors in 1975. Julies Howard, the 6-foot-7M big man and the teamas only senior, gave the Broncs muscle under the boards and near 10 rebounds against taller men.
