Tarlton Law Library, located in the Jamail Center for Legal Research, is a key resource for students attending the University of Texas School of Law. The library dates back to 1883, the year the Law School was founded. An initial investment of only $254.50 formed the foundation of the library. From its humble beginnings, it has grown to become one of the largest and most important academic law libraries in the United States, encompassing more than 170,000 square feet. Tarlton Law Library is recognized as the finest legal research center in the Southwest and it houses the 6th largest law school library collection in the US. Upon entering the library on the 2nd Floor, you will notice the circulation desk and a reference desk. Both are staffed by friendly librarians who are eager to provide assistance to anyone requesting it. With the assistance of computer terminals, the reference librarians are very adept at locating any resource from microforms to rare books. If an item is not available within the library, the staff can request the publication via an interlibrary loan program. When students request assistance at Tarlton, they get the best help that any library has to offer. Members of the library staff are extremely knowl- edgeable and many have degrees in library sci- ence. Most of the public service librarians also have law degrees. This is why Tarlton Law Library is nationally recognized as a training center for law librarians. Several Tarlton alumni have become directors of law libraries throughout the country, many of whom were mentored by our own Professor Roy Mersky.
