The library dates back to 1883, the year the Law School was founded. An initial investment of only $254.50 formed the foundation of the library. From its humble beginnings, it has grown to become one of the largest and most important academic law libraries in the United States, encompassing more than 170,000 square feet. Tarlton Law Library is recognized as the finest legal research center in the Southwest and it houses the 6th largest law school library collection in the US. Upon entering the library on the 2nd Floor, you will notice the circulation desk and a reference desk. Both are staffed by friendly librarians who are eager to provide assistance to anyone requesting it. With the assistance of computer terminals, the reference librarians are very adept at locating any resource from microforms to rare books. If an item is not available within the library, the staff can request the publication via an interlibrary loan program. When students request assistance at Tarlton, they get the best help that any library has to offer. Members of the library staff are extremely knowl- edgeable and many have degrees in library sci- ence. Most of the public service librarians also have law degrees. This is why Tarlton Law Library is nationally recognized as a training center for law librarians. Several Tarlton alumni have become directors of law libraries throughout the country, many of whom were mentored by our own Professor Roy Mersky. ABOVE Oliver Eclannal locates a book for Eric Romberg at the front desk. BELOW Students use the library terminals for checking email, accessing library c line catalogs (TALLONS) and for other research Tarlton Law Library The Law in Popular Culture Room Is also located on the 2nd Floor. It is home to thou- sands of books and videos that can be used by students to study the portrayal of law in popular culture. This room is a favorite retreat for fresh laws in need of stress relief. The Popular Reading Room on the southeast side of the 2nd Floor houses current maga- zines, state and national news- papers, fiction and non-fiction. In this room, students can take time out of their busy day to update themselves on world national, and local events. You can find the Reserve Reading Room on the 4th Floor. This room contains high-demand items such as previous law exams, treatises, hornbooks, commercial outlines, nutshells, and many other tools vital to the study and understanding of law. This is a popular room for law students during finals. The Media Center is located on the 4th floor. It houses items such as videotapes, microforms, and audiocassettes. Student workers stand by. ready to pro- vide assistance with printing or other computer-related issues that may arise. There are also classrooms in which LEXIS and WESTLAW training are offered at vahous times throughout the year. The Foreign and International Law Collection on the 6th Floor houses substantial collections of international documents relating to public international law, foreign law, and private interna- tional law. This collection includes documents from the United Nations, the Organization of American States, and the Council of Europe. The Computer L plays an important part in the education of today ' s law student. 8 — Tarlton Law Library aw Library Reache I Milestone: i ' 1 Millionth Volume The Rare Books and Special Collections on the 6th Floor contain a wide range of unique and valu- able historical resources, which include books, manuscripts, photographs, videos, and artifacts. This collection is especially useful for scholars interested in the history of law. The archives include the Justice Tom C. Clark papers that docu- ment the term of the only Texan ever appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court. The Rare Books collection boasts a very special collection of legal dictionaries, which includes the recently acquired Tarlton Library Millionth Volume, John Rastell ' s The Exposicions of [the] Termys of [the] Law of England (1523). Acquisition of this extremely rare and significant work was made possible through the generous donation of alum- nus Joseph D. Jamail. To celebrate the acquisi- tion, in December 2001, the law school hosted Language and the Law, a conference attracting legal scholars from around the world to discuss the different ways in which language has had an impact on the law. The 1523 Rastell dictionary and other important works of the Rare Book Collection are available for use by students and the general public, but because of the age and value of the collection, the materials in the collection can only be used with supervision and access is limited. At some point during their law school studies, students should take the time to visit this extremely interesting and precious library treasure. Tarlton Library is lavishly decorated with many objects of art from the Hyder collection. This col- lection amasses nearly 4000 works of art that are found not only in the library, but throughout the Law School, as well. Martha Rowan Hyder and her husband, the late Elton M. Hyder, have gener- ously loaned this collection to the library and the Law School. Long after students depart the halls of the Law School, images of the Hyder collection will remain in their memories. Whether the purpose is study or leisure, Tarlton Law Library has no shortage of resources avail- able for student needs. Students should find time during their studies to take advantage of all that the library has to offer. Tarlton Law Library - Studying Abroad I did the London program at QMW and had a blast. The professors were all very nice and knowledgeable. The other students in my classes were from all over the world, and everyone was very nice. — Keith Cooper from England Each year the UT Law School offers a host of opportu- nities for third-year law students to study abroad. The most popular is the Semester in London (SIL) program which began in the fall of 1987. Up to 70 students each year can study international and comparative law while attending one of two law schools in London, Queen Mary and Westfield College (QMW) or the University College of London. Through this program students can earn cred it towards their UT law degree. Megan Harbison and John Campbell both participated in the SIL program. While studying in London, they were able to visit Big Ben, Pariiament and Buckingham Palace, and on the weekends their sight- seeing adventures took them to Dublin, Cambridge and Switzerland. During Kristie Diemer ' s stay in London, she got a true feel for the city She said, We lived in a flat on Soho Square, and I loved the location! When she wasn ' t attending the West End Theatre, or strolling through Picadilly Circus and Covent Gardens, Kristie was trav- eling through countries from Spain to Scotland. While discussing her coursework in the SIL program, Kristie remarked that her studies would be beneficial to her future law career since ...the LLM courses I chose (were) all relavent to the area of law in which I will be practicing. Michelle Mulier was one of the students who studied at the University of Melbourne in Australia. When asked how she prepared for her trip Down Under, Michelle said, I did some research about Melbourne, looking at things like available housing and what kind of weather to expect. Otherwise, I decided to figure it out once I got there. She rented a one bedroom apartment off campus. It was on a block that was wedged between two large public parks, an area that was popular with graduate students and people working at the University. Michelle confessed, The hardest part for me was just the constant low-level frustration of things not working the way I expect them to. After awhile ... I got used to not being able to have certain things I was used to having, and instead got used to having things I ' d never heard of before I came to Australia. One of her favorite discoveries was a little chocolate-covered choco- late cookie called a Tim Tam. Michelle admitted, Tim Tams are seriously additive. I am now in Tim Tam withdrawal. Michelle also got her share of sigh tseeing while in Australia. (One) fantastic experience was my trip to the Great Barrier Reef. I stayed on Heron Island which is a small island on a coral reef in the cooler southern part of the Great Barrier Reef. During the day you could snorkel in the shallows around the island where there were many reef sharks and large manta rays, or you could take a boat out to the edges of the reef to snorkel or scuba among the colorful and varied coral reef formations teeming with all sorts of sea life. It was a fantastic trip and well worth the sunburn. My advice would be that if you ' ve ever had an interest in seeing what it ' s like to live in another country, you should Just do it . Chances like this don ' t come around all that often in life. You shouldn ' t waste them. — Michelle Mulier Michelle found her courses at the University of Melbourne to be a little different than her UT law courses. I was taking graduate level courses in law rather than the undergraduate level courses that make up the basic law curriculum. The courses were therefore very much directed toward offering an immediate practical benefit to profes- sionals, almost more like an intensive CLE here than a law school class, said Michelle. With the exception of the small class, the students in each section attend all classes together throughout their freshman year. This constant asso- ciation with classmates often builds friendships that continue long after law school is over. Students depend on each other for support in many ways during that daunting first year of law school. - rw .i.l i 5 Freshlaw Sections 88 — Freshlaw Seciions Fresh law Sections Some form study groups, while others just hang out together during breaks. Very often, if a fellow student is caught ill pre- pared by the Socratic method of instruction, classmates rescue the struggling student by volunteering to answer the question. Many would agree that freshlaw sections are lifelines vital to first year success.
