Semester in London Program The Semester in London Program began in the fall of 1987 as an exchange program with the University of London’s Queen Mary and West-field College, one of England’s most prestigious law schools. With the approval of the American Bar Association, approximately 30 students are enrolled for a semester at QMW, receiving credit toward their JD degrees at the UT School of Law. The program is unique among American law schools. The law faculty at QMW is regularly rated as one of the best in England. The exchange process gets underway nearly a year before the students selected will arrive in London. Each fall, students desiring to enter the program for the following year apply and are selected on the basis of academic performance, academic references and international interests. Once selected, students have the opportunity to spend a semester in London studying a wide array of international law courses, including offerings on public international law, the European economic community, comparative law, international finance, international trade, the law of the sea, international human rights and several specialized national subjects. Students pay tuition directly to the University of London — at a reduced rate — and some financial assistance is available. Because most University of London classes are taught on a yearlong schedule, courses attended by UT students are designed so that the fall semester of the course comprises a discrete body of material. Participants generally begin classes in late September and finish exams a few days before Christmas. The late beginning allows many students to begin their semester with travel to various parts of Europe. The advisors for the program are Professor Michael Sturley and Professor Jay Westbrook. 4 — Semester in London Program

Yudof accepts executive VP and provost job UT President Robert Berdahl named Mark Yudof, long-time dean of the UT School of Law, to the No. 2 position at the University Wednesday, April 6. The appointment will end Yudof's 24-year tenure at the prestigious law school and make him the University's new executive vice president and provost. Gerhard Fonken, who currently holds the position, tendered his resignation last fall. The search for a new provost began almost immediately with an advertisement in The Chronicle of Higher Education. The pool of 163 applicants was narrowed to six last week, and one finalist withdrew his application. “I am delighted that Dean Yudof has accepted the position,” Berdahl said in a prepared statement. “I look forward to working with him.” Yudof said his long service as dean made it hard for him to apply for the position. It was a very hard decision. It is a great law school, and I have enjoyed myself, Yudof said. I am looking forward to it. Douglas Laycock, chairman of the 16-member selection committee, said Yudof is the best law school dean in the country. “(Yudof) will bring lots of creativity and initiative to the office,” Laycock said. We will have our two best people working together. Yudof applied for the UT presidency in fall 1992, along with Berdahl. I have developed great admiration for (Yudof’s) intelligence, academic leadership, managerial abilities and wit,” Berdahl said in a prepared statement. Yudof said his good relationship with Berdahl made his decision to apply for provost easier, and Yudof added that he probably will take over the position in early summer. We have worked together since he came to campus, Yudof said. Yudof added that he and Berdahl share the same academic values. We see eye to eye on many issues.” Yudof said. Yudof also said he wants to have a pro-active office that facilitates the needs of the students and faculty, and added that he is ready to tackle issues such as students' graduation time and professors' rigid workload. I want to make sure the academ point of view is well represented. Yudof said. I want to make sure we ar helping the students and faculty d what they want to do. He said he also will try to stimulai more interdisciplinary and internation: programs at the University. Fonken, who has been at UT sine 1970, said that the administration w benefit greatly from Yudof's admini: trative experience. Yudof has served as associate dea for academic affairs and taught course and seminars in education policy an the law, contracts, local governmer law and constitutional law. He earned bachelor's degree and doctor of lai degree from the University of Penns l vania. Yudof has authored Gender Justid Education Policy and the Law; Whe Government Speaks; Three Faces of Ac ademic Freedom; The Human Voice J Legal Rule and School Finance Reforrr. Don't Worry Be Happy. No formal search has yet begun fori new law school dean. — Renae Ment 6 — Mark Yudof
