depicted with a high-top work shoe on each front foot, a boxing glove on each hind foot. It was thus shod when it made its first appearance in print, in the 1902 Cactus . The first papier mache model of | the Peregrinus was created in the fall of 1912. It is unknown exactly how many have been created and destroyed since. The Peregrinus which currently reigns over the Law School appeared about 1948. The upraised left front foot and the right hind foot each wear a cowboy boot emblazoned with the Texas Lone Star. The other two feet are bare, showing claws. The legs are somewhat thicker and shorter than on the original Per-f egrinus. and the tail is far less bushy. I Brought out only on special occa- sions, the Peregrinus is kept safe in a secret location. Russell Savage practiced law in Corpus Christi for many years. On February 24, 1936, he wrote to Judge Ira P. Hildebrand, then Dean of the Law Department: Someone has suggested to me that, as I am getting past middle age, it might be well to do something about the Peregrinus. Personally, I doubt very much that anyone but an engineer would have any designs on the Peregrinus. Nevertheless, as the sole perpetrator of this monstrosity, I will be glad to do anything that you may suggest to fix the ownership where it belongs. The only thing I can think of just at present is for me to photo by John foinotth convey whatever right I have in it to the University for the benefit of the Law Department, and then the La Department could take out the nec essary papers on It. I really am cor fused in whether it should be copy righted, trademarked, or patented Perhaps, being somewhat anima like, it might be registered. I feel sure that the Junior Laws of this year will be able to work out the procedure. With best wishes. I am, Your friend, Russell Savage Although, there is no record of It being officially adopted, the Peregrinus is now firmly rooted as the traditional symbol of The University of Texas School of Law. Semester in London Program The Semester in London Program began in the fall of 1987 as an exchange program with the University of London’s Queen Mary and West-field College, one of England’s most prestigious law schools. With the approval of the American Bar Association, approximately 30 students are enrolled for a semester at QMW, receiving credit toward their JD degrees at the UT School of Law. The program is unique among American law schools. The law faculty at QMW is regularly rated as one of the best in England. The exchange process gets underway nearly a year before the students selected will arrive in London. Each fall, students desiring to enter the program for the following year apply and are selected on the basis of academic performance, academic references and international interests. Once selected, students have the opportunity to spend a semester in London studying a wide array of international law courses, including offerings on public international law, the European economic community, comparative law, international finance, international trade, the law of the sea, international human rights and several specialized national subjects. Students pay tuition directly to the University of London — at a reduced rate — and some financial assistance is available. Because most University of London classes are taught on a yearlong schedule, courses attended by UT students are designed so that the fall semester of the course comprises a discrete body of material. Participants generally begin classes in late September and finish exams a few days before Christmas. The late beginning allows many students to begin their semester with travel to various parts of Europe. The advisors for the program are Professor Michael Sturley and Professor Jay Westbrook. 4 — Semester in London Program
