HUIE ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP During the 1988-89 school year, the University of Texas Law School Foundation was able to establish several new scholarships for the benefit of the student body. Among these new scholarships are the William O. Huie Endowed Presidential Scholarship in l.aw, the Robert Strauss Presidential Scholarship in l.aw, the UMSTATTD Presidential Scholarship, and the Thompson and Knight Harold F. Kleinman Endowed Presidential Scholarship in I.aw. This year also saw the creation of the Vial, Hamilton, Koch and Knox Endowed Mock Trial Competition. ABOVE: Professor William O. INTERVIEWING STUDENTS PLEASE KNOCK ON DOOR AT ALLOTTED INTERVIEW TIME INTERVIEWER WILL THEN CALL FOR YOU WHEN READY The employment search continued during the school year as law students scrambled through the interview process to obtain summer clerkships and permanent jobs with law firms across the country. Each round of interviews began with computerized selection of firms based upon a student’s ranked choices. After interview awards were posted, students researched firms in the Placement Office library, preparing for the interview itself in one of the dreaded cubicles. For many, the rewards of the process were great. Interviewing — 11

CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS Law Students continually study the interplay of personal freedom and constitutional rights. In March, as the Supreme Court once again prepared to take up the question of abortion. Sarah Weddington of Hoe v. Wade fame spoke to law students at the University of Texas. In the pivotal Hoe decision, the United States Supreme Court held that no woman could be denied the right to have an abortion. Weddington, a successful attorney in Austin, explained her own position in that pivotal ease, arguing that an unborn fetus has no rights which can outweigh a woman's control over the state of her own body. Students on both sides of the issue were present for the discussion, which was respectful but at time heated. Many felt that Hoe would be overturned shortly. based upon the conservative makeup of the Court after Ronald Reagan's two terms as President. Weddington acknowledged that the Court’s support of abortion has been on the decline and that the upcoming decision remained entirely unpredictable. Time will tell.
