Around Townes ‘10 to 12’ nets extra library hours Cutbacks by the Texas Legislature, in a desperate attempt to keep Texas from careening into financial abyss, saw fit to hit the law school right where it hurts. Tarlton Library was to close at 10 p.m. weeknights. At 10 p.m.' Barely enough time for avid studiers to get buried in Securities Regulation or to prepare for Torts class. So law students rallied, reached deep into their pockets and doled out money to pay for two Library staff members that would keep the Library open from 10 p.m. to midnight. The “ 10 to 12” campaign was sponsored by the Student Bar Association, but backed by numerous students and student groups. The drive raised $2,200 on its way to a $2,500 goal. That amount was enough to keep Tarlton open for two extra hours per night, Sunday through Thursday, for both the fall and spring semesters. Individual group donations, including sponsorship by the Board of Advocates and the Women s Law Caucus, kept the Library open for specific weeks during the fall. Although undergraduates studying in the law library were generally disliked, it seems a number of big campus students donated to the fund. I walked into the library and saw the donation box, said freshman Klara Zchcntmayr. I like to study here, so I put some money in. SBA installs free student mailboxes As you'd walk by the Casino entrance, all you could sec in the corner by the elevator were rows upon rows of wooden mail slots. But who the heck was getting mail in them? For many months this strange contraption stood dormant. Suddenly last spring, numbers appeared under each slot, and a long list of names was matched with these numbers and posted nearby. It seems the Student Bar Association had struck again. The SBA had arranged for every law student registered at UT to have a mailbox. A place where the Placement Office, Main Office and other student groups could reach just about anyone. Even a place for secret admirer love notes. The boxes are free to all registered students. Around Townes —

Pipeline plagues parking on 26th Parking along 26th Street has always been difficult, but the installation of a gas pipeline along the south side of the street made getting a good spot a real nightmare. The pipeline project lasted about two months, during September and October of the fall semester, eclipsing more than 50 spaces for parking near the law school. Getting to Townes early usually guarantees a dose spot, but the construction essentially meant making it to law school before 7 a.m. For many non-morning people, that was too much to ask — often meaning an illegal parking place and a ticket or a tow.
