Bernard J. Ward Professorship The dedication in the 1983 edition of the Peregrinus states that the late Bernie Ward was “one of the finest and most effective law professors that students ever had at Texas.” That feeling materialized this year into a monumental effort by over 100 law students, former students, faculty members, administrators, and community leaders. Together, they raised the funds from hundreds of contributors to establish the Bernard J. Ward Centennial Professorship in I,aw. A convocation was held honoring the professorship on October 25, 1983, in which Mrs. Elaine Ward was presented with a plaque signifying the honor. Professor Charles Alan Wright, the Honorable Thomas Gee, and Susan G. Conway provided glimpses intoWard’s life.' Certificates of appreciation were presented toChLSA, SBA, TLR, TMLS, and the Travis High School Trailblazers. Chairman of the campaign committee was Charles Alan Wright. The Executive committee was composed of Jerry Bell. Kevin Holcombe, Pal Kelly, and Camille Phillips. Charles Alan Wright Susan G. FIRST CLASSES OF THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS LAW SCHOOL THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS HELD ITS FIRST CLASSES IN THE TEMPORARY CAPITOL AT THIS SITE ON SEPT. 15,1883. FIFTY-TWO OF THE 218 ORIGINAL STUDENTS WERE REGISTERED IN THE LAW DEPARTMENT. THEY WERE TAUGHT BY FORMER GOVERNOR OF TEXAS ORAN M. ROBERTS (1815-1898) AND FORMER TEXAS SUPREME COURT JUSTICE ROBERT S. GOULD 0826-1904). MANY MEMBERS OF THE UNIVERSITY’S FIRST LAW CLASS WENT ON TO HAVE DISTINGUISHED CAR E ERS. INCLUDING ALBERT SIDNEY BURLESON.WHO SERVED AS U. S. POSTMASTER GENERAL FROM 1913 TO 1921 AND YANCY LEWIS, WHO LATER RETURNED TO SERVE AS A LAW SCHOOL PROFESSOR, An historical marker was unveiled at the site. W. Page Keeton related law school history.
