For more than 30 years. The Hildebrand Competition has offered law students a chance to polish their silver tongues and sharpen skills in appellate advocacy. As the oldest intrascholastic competition at the Law School, the moot court activity was named in honor of former Law School Dean Ira P. Hildebrand. While 64 two-person teams entered the Fall Competition, only the top three teams in each bracket advanced to the Spring Competition. Substantive areas of the competition included commercial, constitutional, criminal and tort law. Hildebrand Competition Hildebrand — 21

Sunflower Ceremony History reveals that sunflowers were gathered outside the Law School and pinned on the lapels of graduates since UT Law Students traditionally refuse to wear caps and gowns. As more and more construction depleted grassy areas of campus, the coveted flowers became harder to find. Law School administrators began buying plastic sunflowers for December graduates and as the flowers grew more scarce, finally plastic was used year-round. Occasionally, graduates traveled to Laredo and brought back a truckload for all to use. For a few years, bunches of sunflowers appeared. Dean T. J. Gibson asked the students where they had found such a healthy supply. Why it was amazing. Wild sunflowers growing in the straightest rows you could imagine. Dean Gibson rarely asks now where students acquire their symbols of graduation. Sunflower Ceremony — 23
