' r The The University 1977 of Texas PEREGRINUS School of Law Volume 27: Texas Student Publications Famous for his You're scused to unprepared Procedure students unlucky enough to be found out, Gus M. Hodges retired in December after more than 35 years at the Law School. As rumor has it, several years ago Gus had his son Richard in his class. The evening before, both senior and junior attended a cocktail party, Dad, I know how you hate unprepared students so I'm not gonna be in class tomorrow. Don’t worry, Gus assured him. Come to class and at least listen to my lecture. Needless to say, the next morning Gus looked at the seating chart and chose his victim, Mr. Hodges, will you please recite the facts of our next case. You S.O.B., Richard said, slammed close his books and stalked from the room. Whether that one is true or not, Gus never denied it. UT Law School salutes him as an educator, lawyer and legend. Gus, we dedicate this PEREGRINUS to you. 2 — Dedication CONTENTS Features 4 Faculty 26 Organizations 52 Classes 82 Index 132 Closing 142 ■ PEREGRINUS STAFF Barbara Linch Editor-in-Chief Jerry Thompson Supervisor Ron Hicks Assistant Supervisor Larry Kolvoord Photography Supervisor Laura Kislin Copy Editor Chris Kloeris Graphics Editor Kathy Butler General Staff Shirl Worcester Hawes Artist Mr. McCall, please tell this Equity class who the Praetor Peregrinus was, Judge Simkins asked the law-student football center. Rather than reply with the customary I'm not prepared, McCall stood and said, Judge, I don’t know what it was unless it was some kind of animal. Laughter followed as did a mysterious blackboard drawing. McCall withdrew at term's end, but Perry has remained. The physical characteristics of Perry have gradually developed traditional meanings. The sharp beak fights injustice and probes for truth. The boxing gloves represent the Law's power to strike down those who stand against it, while the bushy tail brushes aside deception and any legal technicalities which obstruct equity. The arched back shows a readiness to spring forward to do justice, and the hind quarters are those of a dog — man's best friend. An entire new wing, to be built on the west side of Townes Hall, will increase space for the library, provide study lounges, faculty offices and building services. The proposed construction is designed to relieve overcrowded conditions in 23-year-old Townes Hall. Demolition of the Wesleyan Building began soon after the plans were approved. Faculty and organizations housed in Wesleyan shifted to temporary quarters in Townes Hall. As the first visible sign of things to come, a slab was constructed adjacent to Townes. Professor John Sutton, chairman of a Law School Advisory Committee, suggested the structure so that consistency of building materials could be checked throughout the estimated two-year construction period. Remodeling is to be performed in phases. New classrooms, seminar rooms, student organization areas, lockers, student lounges, refurbished faculty offices, clinical legal education and placement offices are planned. The design also includes a moot courtroom, complete with judge's chambers and jury room. Keeton's Casino will be changed into a new student lounge, and the current basement will become The Rathskeller, a food service area with seating capacity of 250. The most ambitious part of the plan is the moving of the library info a proposed six-story structure. Greatly-expanded carrel space, and audio-visual room, an open access reserve reading room and a duplicating and print shop are major innovations proposed. To reduce inconvenience during construction, the noisiest remodeling will be done at night. Some disruption of classes is expected when the new utility tunnel is built. The balcony of the Charles I. Francis Auditorium will be converted into a walkway to connect the new building to the present structure. After the plan was formulated. Regents' Chairman Allan Shivers assured that enrollment of the Law School would not be increased. The 1933 UT Law School graduate said that the new addition was designed to ease overcrowding and was not contingent on increasing enrollment. Building Expansion — II Dean Green: Res Ipsa Loquitur In 1947, Deon Leon Green returned to his alma mater to teach a coupla more years before retiring and to do some writing. Those coupla more years stretched into an extra 30 when Dean Green retired once again from teaching. A prolific writer. Dean Green has attacked his foremost enemy — the proximate cause doctrine — in many of his 16 books and 1 50 articles. Dean Green's former students all recall the times they had to recite” for him at the front of the class. After 60 years of devotion to his students, that's a lot of recitation. UR T -RELATlQl IASS OF I 2 — Dcon Green Tom Breeding Talk of the Townes Q I If tonight was the night before your LSAT, would you still decide to take if? TOM BREEDING: More than likely. I went out the night before and got drunk on Sparkling Burgundy. I got in at 3 a.m. and my roommate had to assassinate me to get me up to take the exam. The LSAT was boring but law school’s fun: Really unique, better than working. It’s been real . . . well, really not. RICK DISNEY: Yeah . . . I’ve enjoyed law school. I’d do it again, but then I have a job now. That changes the outlook. Andreo Ferguion Q ! Out of all the cases you’ve studied in Law School, which have you thought was the most significant? ANDREA FERGUSON: I just love those cases where the judges write those fantastic opinions. I also enjoy reading those little bitty facts in cases . . . like the one where they were caught stealing in a house and said they were hunting mushrooms with a pair of pliers. Isn't that a riot? MARY ESTHER HERNANDEZ: The Alger Hiss case in Property. He was excluded from getting his pension from the State Department because of his trial. They had tried to deprive him of something not directly related to his job, just for political reasons. It was ex post facto and so I agree with the court that it was unfair. Reuben Caiorez Profeisof James Treeee Q Do you agree with the UT Law School grading system? REUBEN CASAREZ: I don’t agree with the system but I don't see any viable alternatives. Grades given often seem fraught with difficulties and inaccuracies, but I understand the need for them. I wouldn’t approve of a straight pass fail system. It's not the system so much as the importance of grades when someone else comes into the picture. YVONNE PUIG: I’d like to see it go to pass fail, but some oppose this because employers would have no way to differentiate between prospective employees. How would we reward the ones who work hard and the person who works super hard? There must be a better way, but I don’t know what. I Now that Gary Gilmore has been executed, how do you feel about the death penalty? PROFESSOR JAMES TREECE: I am opposed to the death penalty, so my attitude did not change after the execution. I think capital punishment brutalizes the culture. Whereas the victim's murder is an act that we are not responsible for collectively, we are responsible for the acts of the State in a more direct way. RON KIRK: I have serious ideological problems with it. In one sense, there’s nothing wrong with it. I'm victim-oriented, and it’s hard to find room in my heart for a murderer. But it's unfairly administered. 99% of those fried are minorities ... The fact that someone was executed bothers me. Halloween and what could be scarier and spookier than a law student? An entire group of drunken law students, of course. Renting Fiesta Gardens near Town Lake for All Hallow's Eve, the SBA sponsored the annual dance and night of drunken stupor. Visits from the Tooth Fairy and Killer Bees awed the crowds. Then, of course, the Three Little Pigs showed up to give Swine Flu shots. On the legal side, A Salt and Battery made his debut. But the show-stopper was the 26th and Red River traffic light who flashed to the delight of the crowd. Artist's Rendering Foil Drunk — 1 5 Sports And I'll huff and I'll puff. . The Rule in Dumpor's Case tackled the mighty Legal Eagles. Both teams played brilliantly, but the Eagles, coached by Professor Charles Alan Wright, emerged as the victors. The Eagles won their division and captured the Graduate School football title. Although defeated in the final play-off for the Women's title, the Illegal Eagles, Law School's women's football team, staged a rematch in Memorial Stadium before the UT-University of Houston game. Many spectators agreed that the 14 to 14 tie was much more exciting to watch than the intercollegiate game which followed. Also, in intramural action, the women’s Law School team Trixie Beldon won the soccer championship. Infromurols — 1 7 You woof me to chug the rest of thot keg?' I this why our TQ always loses?” Most freshlows drank their first law school beer from a keg set out in Eastwoods Park. Adopted as the unofficial social meeting ground for law students, Eastwoods provided a shady area for profs and students to solve the pressing issues of the ages. Even Eeyore the Great Grey Donkey celebrated his birthday in the Park before the crowds grew too large and the maypoles had to be transferred. Just across the street and down the hill, Eastwoods remained the neutral site for TQ volleyball and football games, the Chicano Law Association-sponsored Fajitas Barbecue and the SBA Spring Drunk. Eastwoods Escapades Eoitwoods Park — 19 Locke Mock Trials The prison guard was convicted before the video cameras of conspiring to knowingly and willfully cause the escape of the prisoner. The audience applauded the verdict as Robert Golden and Brent Baldwin for the prosecution were declared the victors of Locke, Purnell, Boren, Laney and Neely Mock Trial Competition. The team and defense attorneys John Dietz and Brian Mul-doon, advanced to the Regional Competition at Baylor. Dietz and Muldoon continued to the Nationals in Houston after again placing second in Waco. Unlike the Kemp Smith Trial Competition which is judged by various law students and which emphasizes a flexibility of scheduling trial dates and times, Locke Mock is a more structured competition with practicing attorneys as judges. 20 — Locke Mock Trial For more than 30 years. The Hildebrand Competition has offered law students a chance to polish their silver tongues and sharpen skills in appellate advocacy. As the oldest intrascholastic competition at the Law School, the moot court activity was named in honor of former Law School Dean Ira P. Hildebrand. While 64 two-person teams entered the Fall Competition, only the top three teams in each bracket advanced to the Spring Competition. Substantive areas of the competition included commercial, constitutional, criminal and tort law. Hildebrand Competition Hildebrand — 21 Strasburger Lecture Series Richard Racehorse Hayno Carol S. As more and more construction depleted grassy areas of campus, the coveted flowers became harder to find. Law School administrators began buying plastic sunflowers for December graduates and as the flowers grew more scarce, finally plastic was used year-round. Occasionally, graduates traveled to Laredo and brought back a truckload for all to use. For a few years, bunches of sunflowers appeared. Dean T. J. Gibson asked the students where they had found such a healthy supply. Why it was amazing. Wild sunflowers growing in the straightest rows you could imagine. Dean Gibson rarely asks now where students acquire their symbols of graduation. Sunflower Ceremony — 23 TOP: GOVERNOR ALLAN SHIVERS BELOW: DEAN W. The films dealt with public institutionalized treatment of Americans. Throughout the fall semester, one of Wiseman's films played every other Tuesday. Welfare, Law and Order, Juvenile Court, High School and Titticut Follies (dealing with a Massachusetts Hospital for the criminally insane) were featured. Completing the festival, the filmmaker appeared to discuss his efforts in an informal session. Frederick Wiseman's Documentary Films AMERICAMINSTITUTIONS vi.
