The University of Texas SCHOOL OF LAW 2300 RED RIVER AUSTIN. TEXAS 78705 omcc or tmb ocan March 1, 19 65 To the Law Students: At the beginning of the school year 1959-60, 783 students were enrolled. The enrollment at the beginning of the current school year was approximately 1400 students. Thus the enrollment has almost doubled during this five-year period. Next fall our enrollment will be about 1550 students and every effort will be made to keep it at approximately this level. During this same five-year period the size of the faculty has also doubled. This means that since 1959 the faculty has increased from about twenty to about forty full-time faculty members. During this period of rapid growth greater selectivity in admissions has been instituted and I am confident that the same high standards for faculty appointments have been maintained. Notwithstanding the rapid rate of growth, therefore, it is my judgment that the quality of the law school performance as a whole has improved. But improvement in certain areas is still needed. There has been little time for thought about how to reorganize some of the legally instructive extracurricular activities for such an expanded enrollment. It is therefore with respect to such activities as the Law Review, the Moot Court, and the Student Research for Lawyers program that reorganization and administrative changes are needed for the purpose of marshalling the talents of faculty and students. This is a task that the students and the faculty must undertake during the remainder of this school year and over the next two or three years. Some of this work has already begun. These activities supplement in a very substantial way the instruction students receive in the classroom and it is imperative that we obtain the same level of excellence in the conduct of such activities as we now have in the classroom. I am confident that the faculty and the administration will get your support in the further Improvement of the law school. Sincerely, Page Keeton Dean
