ALBERT PEARSON JONES 8 9 W. PAGE KEETON Dean of the University of Texas School of Law The university of Texas SCHOOL or LAW 2300 HCO RIVC AUSTIN 3. TEXAS March la, i£ni ‘ To the Law Students: Within a three-year period the enrollment In the Law School in mereesr-d tremendously. In fact more than fifty percent. The toioi enrollment lh s fall was nearly thirty percent more than last year and the tu l-yuar enrollment was about forty percent more. While a substantial increase in our enrollment was expected and planned for, the magnitude of these Increases was not anticipated. Moreover, as you well know, the addition to Townes Hall was not completed on schedule and our hopes and expectations for adequate facilities to begin this school year were frustrated. Both students and faculty have undoubtedly been considerably inconvenienced as a result of the factors just mentioned. For example, sections of many courses have been larger than they ought to have been because of the extremely high student-teacher ratio. Again, the inadequacy of space for study and relaxation has until the beginning of the second semester boon self-evident. But it appears now that the worst is over. I am most pleased about the fact that the students have exercised patience and restraint during this period of transition. It also appears to me that under the leadership of your Board of Governors the plans for the use and enjoyment of the lunch, lounge, and coffee facilities have been carefully worked out and the great majority of students are cooperating exceptionally well. We hope we can eventually have service from the kitchen. For your information, the sixe of the faculty next year will be substantially increased and sections In many of cur courses will no: have to be so large as they have been this year. The first-year enrollment will be reduced slightly and the number of entering students will be adjusted so that the Law School will level off at approximately 1500 students. With your help and assistance and by maintaining our enrollment at approximately the same level we can concentrate during the next few years on improvement. Sincerely I . Dean THOMAS J. The purpose of the Board is to provide working lawyers a service whereby they can have legal questions researched. Members of the board get excellent experience by working these problems. Students can qualify to work on the Board by writing a test problem at any of the general offerings, or you can qualify on an individual basis. No grade average is required to qualify, and the applicant must have only 24 hours final credit. 154 Top Row: Dave Heck. Fred S(tvo. It should be readily apparent that this book is a radical departure from past Peregrini, and that that departure was deliberate is of some meaning. Being somewhat iconoclastic by nature, we intended to chide some of the sacred cows and to tear down the incredibly stilted image of previous books. Sacred cows, one might add, come in several forms around here: ideas, organizations, students and faculty. You will, no doubt, find an occasional barb directed at one or more of these items. Being true iconoclasts, we couldn't resist the temptation of erecting our own icon in the form of this book. We thought that if the law could find new directions in a Space Age. the Pertgrinm could just as well try something new. 156 MEW1 EDITORIAL STAFF: Darryl Spring. The results of this game are best not reported inasmuch as it appears that the Law Review has established something of a trend. But, like the South, the Board of Governors shall also rise again. Not having the scores from all of the previous meetings of this classic, it might lx- necessary to amend that last statement to read: The Board of Governors shall rise (not again, but for the first time). In all fairness, it should lx- noted that the Board was handicapped in this game by the loss of several key players and other generally inclement conditions. Sports writers generally agree that the Board will make a much better showing in the ensuing seasons. This pictorial record should make you aware, or remind you, of the exceptional high quality of the teams involved. 194 198 Bruce Knjpp. Bill Woodford, Fred Sander . .John Cuifif, Gaynell Meihvin.
