'£ 1952 LEON GREEN Distinguished Professor MISS HELEN HARGRAVE Law Librarian and Assistant Professor of Law Even as an undergraduate Helen Hargrave proved her leadership ability and her capacity for hard work, and showed the high regard in which she was held by her fellow students by serving simultaneously as President of Mortar Board, Kappa Beta Pi Legal Sorority, and Pi Beta Phi Social Sorority. After receiving her LL.B. degree from the Texas Law School and being admitted to the bar. Miss Hargrave served as Assistant Law Librarian from 1930 until 1939. In 1940, she attended Columbia University for advanced studies in Law Librarianship, was appointed Law Librarian upon her return to the Texas Law School, and has served in that capacity ever since. A member of the Executive Board of the American Association of Law Libraries, she is now on the Committee of the Law Library Journal, the official publication of the Association. She has been a member of the Public Library Board of Austin and has held Committee chairmanships on the University Library Staff Association. Her Manual for Law Library Inspectors has won acclaim throughout the United States and Canada, and our own Tarlton Library is a tribute to her genius and perseverance. In recognition of her past achievements in the field of Law Librarianship and in gratitude for her excellence as a teacher of Legal Bibliography, the staff of The 1955 Perf.crinus proudly dedicates this yearbook to Miss Helen Hargrave—an outstanding personality, a gracious lady, and a cherished friend. PAGE 5 1949 EDITOR 1950 EDITOR 1951 EDITOR 1952 EDITOR Pat Tennant Woodrow Bean Connell Ashley Robert B. McLeaish, Jr. Judge W. S. Sinikins’ Own Story of Peregrinus 1953 EDITOR Charles E. McDonald You ask for the origin of Ppj«mo]nus. I well remember its birth,—in fact I was present at the accouchement. “This nondescript sprang fully armed and equipped for its mission not from a mental love, but from a disordered brain of a Savage. “Many years ago I was trying to explain to the class in Equity, the origin of the system in Rome and the sources of Equity in the Roman Empire. At that time fledglings just from the high schools were admitted to the Law School. Many of them had never heard of the Roman Empire, and not a few spelled cow with a K.“ Well, I explained to them that when Rome conquered a nation it was incorporated into the Roman Empire subject to its own laws and not to the laws of Rome—that the Roman citizen was not subject to the laws of these incorporated nations—that in due course commerce sprang up be tween the citizens of Rome and the barbaric nations, and there was no law to determine and settle their contractual relations. The Roman Emperor, to settle the troubles arising out of the fact that there was no law applicable to control their contract, appointed a Praetor or chancellor to travel among these nations and to settle all disputes without reference to the laws of Rome, or of the incorporated Nations, but to do justice and decide all disputes, alone by the conscience of the Praetor. Preregrinating from one nation to the other, he was called a Praetor Peregrinus. “The boneheads of the class evidently thought that Peregrinus was an internal organ of the body, for they continually greeted each other, ‘How is your Peregrinus today?’ This fact seems to have developed the humorous side of the incident, and Russell Savage developed a concrete expression of it on the black board, and thus the tradition began. Russell drew better than he knew, for the nondescript animal symbolizes both in limb and attitude the maxims in Equity that guide the administration of the system. For instance, on one of the front feet as originally drawn was an Irish ditcher’s boot—indicating the law’s protection to the least of mankind. On the other front foot were naked claws, indicating that the greatest of mankind must fear is power. The arched back in the attitude of springing, indicated that the law was ever ready to protect right or prevent wrong. The sharp beak indicated the power to penetrate the mysteries of the law, which the true student must obtain by study. The bushy tail indicated that Equity brushes away the technicalities of the law and does justice to the merits ’’ PAGE 6 1954 EDITOR Chuck Cabaniss SOCIETY OE THE PEREGRINUS, INC. LAW SCHOOL THE UNIVERSITY OP TEXAS AUSTIN. TEXAS ■ To Students, Staff, Faculty and Friends of the Law School: As Editor of The 1955 Peregrinus, I want to express my appreciation for your interest in and support of this yearbook. This issue is the seventh edition, and as it was with previous Editors, I too have sought to retain the good and to delete the mediocre of earlier editions as well as to incorporate some new ideas. In keeping with the policy of dedicating The Peregrinus to outstanding law school personalities. Miss Helen Hargrave, Law Librarian and Associate Professor of Law, was selected as our 1955 Dedicatee. Highlights of our 1955 Portia's reign coupled with some background material and interesting sidelights about her and the two Runners-Up have been included this year. The Law Review pages have been moved from the Activities Section to the front part of the book in recognition of the invaluable part the members of the Law Review play in maintaining and furthering the prestige of the Law School. By including pages of the six prior Dedicatees, Editors of The Peregrinus and Portias, in addition to a page of past faculty members, we have taken a few moments to stroll down memory lane. More complete coverage of Order of the Coif and Honor Graduates is provided in this year's book and the names of those students, now lawyers, who passed the March, June and October, 1954, and the March, 1955, bar examinations are furnished for the information of those who recognize that gaining admission to the bar is the goal of every law student and thus an accomplishment worthy of recognition. Consul Awards were given again this year in recognition of those twelve or more students who have made a significant contribution to the Law School community through the medium of activities. Section spreader pages feature both cartoons and activity pictures for variety and for broader coverage of faculty and student activities. A coverage of both last year's and this year’s Law Day programs brings Law Day activities up to date by providing pictorial descriptions of that special day while memories of its success are still fresh. For the first time, also, family pictures, featuring mothers and their children, have been incorporated in the Law Wives section, in the hope of making this book an even more meaningful and personal memento of law school days. Pictures for the class sections came from two sources -- new pictures were taken by Kocn's while Barnes provided reprints for those who preferred to use last year's pictures. The University Printing Division is printing the book for the first time this year and, on behalf of the staff, I wish to express our appreciation for their help and cooperation in publishing The 1955 Peregrinus. She was also presented at the Round-Up Revue as Portia of the Law School and as a Cactu Bluebonnet Bell nominee. PAGF. 10 Jo Ann smiles happily after the big announcement as she accepts a spray of red carnations from Dean Page Keeton. All beauty no brains not our Portia. MISS GEORGANNE ALLEN This vivacious twenty-one-year-old is a first-year student from Austin. A highly energetic young lady, she thrives on a mixed program of hard work and fun. Law school has fulfilled her expectations in this respect. Nancy, a first-year student from Fort Worth, divides her time successfully between law school and extra-curricular activities. Her friendly manner is welcomed in “ye old halls” of Townes Hall. if AGE 12 MISS MIA ■MDTOI'n WINNING PORTIAS OF vO CHANCELLORS WILLIAM INGO MARSCHALL, JR. Grand Chancellor, Spring 1954 Chancellors is a legal honorary society found only at our own Texas Law School, having been organized in 1912 for the purpose of honoring and rewarding by election to membership those law students most likely to succeed and to become a credit to their profession. A combination of consistent scholarship, achievements, and personality, as exemplified by class standing and work on the Texas Law Review are requisites for election to membership. Six students are tapped each semester, adding their numbers to the hundreds of outstanding members of the Texas bar who have received this high honor. The new initiates are then hooded, laden with heavy books, and paraded throughout Townes Hall and even over a large part of the main campus of the University. Chancellors are the traditional keej crs of the Peregrin us, which is brought out of its secret hiding place only on rare and sf ccial occasions. The Chancellors also escort the Portia in the annual Round-Up Parade. Chancellors enjoy the hard-won and unique distinction of being the only local legal honorary society which is noted by the name of its members in the Martin dale-Hubbcll Law Directory. WILLIAM L. The first national convention of Theta Kappa Nu met on February 18, 1911, at the Hotel La Salle, Chicago, and decided to submit to the chapters for adoption not only a thoroughly revised national constitution, but also a recommendation and change of name were ratified by the chapters and thus in February, 1912, the first national organization of the Order of the Coif was effected. Today there are forty-three chapter of the Order. Flection to membership in all cases is restricted by the national constitution to the 10 per cent of the Senior Class who have attained the highest rank in their law school work. The I niversity of Texas chapter has an additional requirement that the student must have completed six units of Texas Law Review work. The mere holding of an office or organization membership was not sufficient, but an appraisal was made of the service rendered by the student while serving in such positions. Scholarship was considered only as it was evidenced through participation in such activities as the Texas Imw Review, and no particular credit was given for one having a high grade average alone. Selection committee members, all Mid-Law students, were ineligible for the award. The committee itself selected all seniors this time and decided to make ineligible all former Consuls. Of the thirteen Consuls selected last year, three were Mid-Laws and of these. Lee Duggan and Ed York arc still in school. Jim Wright having graduated in January 1955. The selection committee consisted of Rosa White, Kappa Beta Pi; Jim Flynt, Delta Theta Phi; Dick Hall. Phi Alpha Delta; Bill Parse. I am certain that you have already observed this. At the beginning of the 1952-53 school year, the last year that the Law School operated from the old law building, the enrollment was 600. At the beginning of the current school year it was approximately 800. Thus, within a two-year span the enrollment increased 33-1 3 percent. A decision has been made to alter the admission requirements by requiring a C-plus average of all applicants with the proviso, however, that students who have as much as a C average but not as much as a C-plus will be permitted to enter, upon the taking and making of a satisfactory grade on a Law School Admission Test now being used by many of the best law schools. This is not expected, however, to alter materially the size of the second- and third-year classes but rather to reject some fifteen percent of those applicants who would otherwise be dropped for unsatisfactory work at the end of the first year. Furthermore. this will not, except for perhaps a year or two, prevent a continuing increase in enrollments. Fortunately, we are located well for expansion, and I foresee a necessity therefor. In the meantime, four very promising young men have been added to next year’s faculty, and I wish to assure you that the Law School administration is making every effort to provide a high level performance of instruction. Sincerely, Page Keeton Dean PAGE 2 JACK PROCTOR Assistant Dean B.A. 1948. LL.B. 1949, University of Texas. Admitted to practice in Texas. 1949. Available for vour class regardless of year. HEMPHILLS AUSTIN, TEXAS Peregrinus Finally Confesses Six-Year Iloax Joel Kirkpatrick in an article in the Daily Texan last March titled “Peregrinus Six-Year Hoax Exposed” related how Peregrinus Editor Pat Tennant and a friend Bob Doss conceived the idea of stealing a bust of former president H. Y. Benedict, giving it the fictitious name of William Gray Johnson, and placing it in the law school library. In furtherance of this same plot, they took a 1948 Cactus picture of an anonymous student, labeled it William Gray Johnson II, and placed it in the first year section of the 1949 Peregrinus. That same BEFORE William Gray Johnson VIII year, congratulations to the Peregrinus Staff from a fictitious William Gray Johnson Foundation for Legal Education appeared in the book. Each year since 1949, the editors of the Peregrinus have put W'illiam Gray Johnson in a different part of the annual, so that last year William Gray Johnson VII, appeared as a Research Associate, associated with Dr. Hubert W. Smith. However “the plot has thickened” in that this “anonymous” student whose picture has been used all these years is now a first year law student, whose real name is James W. “Bo” Coburn. Below are pictures of “Bo” as he looked in 1948 and as he appears in the 1955 Peregrinus. “Time has wrought many changes,” don’t you think? AFTER James W. “Bo Colburn COMMENTS COMMENTS
